The Under 14s had their first outing in the Football Championship against Roanmore at home last Saturday evening. It was a poor game with Roanmore the easy winners.
Minor Football
Our Minor Footballers took the short trip to Ferrybank were they took on the home side, in a must win game to qualify into the knockout stages. The opening half was much controlled by the men of blue and white as they led at the break by 2 points. After the break the monastery men continued to add to their total with 2 well taken frees and one from play. Ferrybank made a late rally with 4 points inside the last 10 minutes to take the spoils. Final score Mount Sion 1-8 Ferrybank 1-8. Their final league game takes place next Sunday (see below for more details).

Mr Binman” Go Games Blitzes.
Our second and third class hurlers took part in their first ever school matches on Thursday last in Ballygunner as part of the “Mr Binman” blitzes. The afternoon of hurling by 120 schoolchildren was an excellent success and great credit must go to the Games Development Officers, Eoin Breathnach, John Quinn, David Robinson and Stephen Power for all their organisational efforts. Four schools participated in our section, Ballygunner NS, Scoil Lorcáin, De La Salle Stephen Street and ourselves. The blitzes will take place each Thursday for the month of March at a different venue, culminating in a festival of hurling in Walsh Park on 25th March.
Mount Sion had three teams participating in last Thursday’s matches. The standard from all schools was excellent and was helped greatly by a perfect pitch and spring sunshine. Scott Hoban and PJ Murphy starred for their team and were well assisted by David Adebayo and newcomer Samuel Mathe. Stephen Flynn and Thomas McLawrence led their team very well and had great support from young PJ Fanning and Conor Tierney, both of whom scored some fantastic scores. Eoin Power and Ben Frisby showed all their skills throughout the afternoon and their team was backboned by a strong and brave Oisín Daly and the athletic Timi Sobowale. Yuri Eliyashevsky proved his yard hurling practise has brought him on greatly and he finished his final game with a wonderful goal.
Many thanks to club juvenile coaches who give of their time to come into the school each week to work with our little hurlers. Thanks in particular to Seamie Nolan and Damien Frisby who do great work each week with these classes and who attended to help out with the teams for the blitzes. Their efforts are very much appreciated and the fruits of their work were on display in these games.
The next blitz takes place on Thursday next in De la Salle’s Gracedieu grounds at 12 o’ clock and finishing at 2o’ clock. Parents who are available to attend would be greatly welcome.
Well done to all the boys who performed greatly all afternoon. The teams that represented the school so well last week were;
Team 1: Scott Hoban, PJ Murphy, Conor Meaney, Kieran Hanrahan, Cian O’ Grady, David Adebayo, Conor Freeman, Samuel Mathe, Kieran Ryan.
Team 2: Stephen Flynn, Thomas McLawrence, PJ Fanning, Conor Tierney, Cian O’ Sullivan, Kaylem Wall, Ben Ryan, Daire Burke, Victor Planciunas, Brian Murphy.
Team 3: Eoin Power, Ben Frisby, Oisín Daly, Timi Sobowale, Jack Byrne, Aaron Murphy, Robert Jacob, Yuri Eliyashevsky, Ben le Blanc, and Sean Dunne.
Under 10 Indoor Hurling:
Our third and fourth class hurlers narrowly missed out on progressing to the Eastern Finals of the indoor hurling when they bowed out in the Waterford Crystal Centre. Having battled hard to beat a gallant Ferrybank side the boys then had to meet Stephen Street in what would prove to be the deciding game afternoon. Having started well and taken an early lead, the monastery boys had to give way to a better Stephen Street outfit that rallied to run out 5-2 winners in the end. We rounded off the afternoon with a victory over Waterpark. Well done to all the lads who performed excellently throughout the games.
Panel: Aaron Healy, Bill Wall, Charlie Costello, Scott Hoban, Jordan Halpin, Evan McGrath, Jordan Roche, Sam Robinson, Stephen Flynn and Eoin Power.
Yard Hurling League:
Our yard hurling leagues continue this week as the season enters the busy period. The numbers playing this year will make it very interesting as the boys try and make a place in the finals day to battle out for the O’Grady shield and the other class trophies. Well done to all the boys who are participating.
Mini Sevens:
Some boys from our senior classes will be participating in the Cumann na mBunscol Mini Sevens today, (Tuesday 9th March) at 1pm in Ballygunner. Very best of luck to all those involved.
Paul Flanagan and Pat Barrett:
Many thanks to Paul and Pat for their continued efforts with our infant classes each week. Your work is very much appreciated by staff and children alike and no doubt you are unearthing a few new stars in the process! Míle buíochas.
Under11/13 School Training:
Because of our participation in the Mini Sevens on Tuesday 9th, there will be no school training on this day this week.
