Under 16s
Our Shercon Under 16 hurlers continued their winning way last week with victories over Portlaw on Monday and Abbeyside on Thursday. That makes it three out of three in the county championship. Our thanks to Portlaw who allowed the fixture go ahead. When their pitch was unplayable they agreed to come to Cnoc Sion to play instead. There have been big improvements made by many of the under 16s this year including Sean Kelly at full back, Peter Penkert at left corner back, Ben Walsh at midfield or wing back, Robert Emmett Healey at corner forward and Joey Sinnott at wing forward. We have recorded good victories so far but no doubt the remaining games in the League section will be tough so a big effort will be needed to make sure that we progress to the Quarter final or Semi-final.
This week we will have hosted Cappaquinn on Monday 12th in the County championship and will play Clonea on Thursday 15th also at home, in the Eastern Championship at 6.30pm.
Under 21
Our Under 21 hurlers got their championship campaign off to a winning start with a one point win over Passage in Ballygunner on Wednesday evening last. It was a great performance by this young side that had to field a team without the influential Martin O’Neill and Brian Cusack who are out of action due to injuries. Playing with the slight breeze in the first half, Mount Sion dominated with the aid of Owen Whelan leading from midfield and led at half time by 0-9 to 0-5.
After the break the men from Passage rallied back to draw level and eventually took a one point lead. With seven minutes remaining Mount Sion fought back to take the lead with points from Ian Galgey and Barry Ryan. In the dying minutes Passage piled on the pressure; however the men of blue and white held on for a one point win. Final score Cnoc Sion 0-14 to Passage 0-13. The Eastern-Final takes place next Friday at 6.30pm in Walsh Park against Ballygunner.
Ladies Football
Our Ken McGrath sponsored Ladies Football team took on Tourin on Sunday evening last. The girls put in a huge effort in this tight game, especially in the final few minutes, when the away team put the pressure on, but came out winners by a goal. This win keeps the girls undefeated, winning four out of four games. Final score 3-14 to 5-5.
Senior Hurling
Our Senior hurlers were due to take on Ballyduff Lower in the first round of the league on Sunday last. However due to Ballyduff unable to field a team, we received a walkover. Round two of the league is next Saturday against Abbyside at 7pm in Abbyside.
