Under 14
The Deise Decoration sponsored Under 14s took on Dungravan last Monday night in the second round of the championship. With Mount Sion playing against a strong breeze, Dungravan opened the scoring with a brace of goals before Ryan Flanagan scored Mount Sion’s only score of the half with a point. Dungravan dominated the half and led easily by 4-7 to 0-1 at the break.
At the resume in play, Dungravan quickly continued their fine run of play by adding 2-1 to their tally. However the rest of the half was Mount Sion with goals from Ryan Flanagan, and Evan Curran, and 2 points from Aidan Power and a point from Cian O’Regan, however this still left too much to do. Final score Mount Sion 2-4 Dungravan 6-8. The third round took place on Monday 17th May against Passage, report to follow next week.
Junior Hurlers
Our Junior Hurlers played their first home game of the championship last Friday night with a well deserved win over rivals Ballygunner. Ballygunner were first to draw blood with a point from play. Both sides traded points before Patrick Bowe smashed the ball to the net to give Sion a one point lead at the break by 1-4 to 0-6.
Sion continued to dominate with points from Brian Hennessy operating at full forward and minor stars Evan Sheridan and Aaron Dempsey. With 10 minutes remaining and Mount Sion leading by 7 points, Ballygunner turned to attack for goals. A fine save from a one on one from the Mount Sion keeper kept his clean sheet intact. Two fine long range points from Shane Flynn and points from Rory Sheridan sealed an 11 point win for the men of blue and white. The next Junior Hurling game is 4th June away to Tramore.
Sargent Cup
The senior hurlers took on Dungravan last Tuesday night in Mount Sion. Having to field a team without county stars, Sion eased into the lead with points from Ross O’Keeffe and Steven Roche. Mount Sion led at the half with two goals from Martin F. O’Neill. After the break another goal by the young minor and further ones from Dan Kelly and substitute Mark Hoban gave Mount Sion a well deserved win. Final score 5-18 to 2-10. We were due to play Stradbally in the quarter-final, however we received a walkover. The semi-final is due to take place on Tuesday May 22nd.
Under 11 School Hurling
Our under 11 hurlers are playing De La Salle Stephen’s Street today, Tuesday, in the under 11 semi finals. Having had a very good win against Scoil Lorcáin in their last game our young team will need an even better performance against our city neighbours. Throw in time has yet to be announced but it is likely to be around 2pm in De la Salle’s grounds in Gracedieu. Best of luck to all the boys.
School Yard Hurling Leagues
With only two weeks left to “CHAMPS Week,” and our finals, points are crucial in our yard hurling leagues. Full points in these final two weeks will be very important for some players so make sure to bring your hurley and helmet on your day.
CHAMPS Week
Our now annual CHAMPS Week (Celebrating Hurling At Mount Sion Primary School) will take place on the week beginning 31st May 2010. As usual the week’s diary is packed with hurling relating activities. Amongst the events will be our yard hurling finals, the visit of St Joseph’s school from Dublin, the Great GAA Quiz, our infant blitzes, skills competitions, jersey day and of course visits from some very special hurling guests!
Brother Dowling Cup
This year sees the Brother Dowling Cup extended to a full inter schools competition involving Mount Sion and CBS schools from Kilkenny and Tipperary. Brother Dowling, aside from being a great educationalist was instrumental in the fostering and nurturing of young hurlers in Mount Sion for a generation. Amongst those who prospered during Brother Dowling’s time in the school were hurlers such as Ken and Eoin McGrath, Eoin Kelly, Brian Greene and many, many more! The Dowling family have donated a magnificent cup which will now be competed for by under 12 hurlers from CBS schools in the South East-a fitting tribute to giant of Mount Sion school.
This year, the schools competing will be Scoil Iognáid de Rís Kilkenny, Bunscoil McCauley Rice Callan, St. Mary’s CBS Primary Carrick-on-Suir and Mount Sion CBS. The tournament will take place on Tuesday next, 22nd June 2010. The tournament is for under 12 hurlers. The day will involve a shield final and of course a final for the Brother Dowling Perpetual Trophy. The family of the late Brother Dowling will present the trophies to the winning schools and we hope that any club members available on the day will attend to commemorate a very special man and enjoy a great festival of under 12 hurling.
