Senior Hurling
The Snowcream Hurling Championship got underway last Sunday afternoon against Tallow. Mount Sion were first off the mark with a point from Ken McGrath, however Tallow rallied back with a goal from county star Thomas Ryan, who sneaked the ball past Ian O’Regan on the Sion goal. Tallow pulled away for the remainder of the half, with Mount Sion failing to put any score on the board and went in the half 1-6 to 0-1 down.
Tallow continued their dominance when within the first 2 minutes of the restart, a shot from Thomas Ryan was stop by the Sion keeper, but the ball rebounded to the full forward who blasted the ball to the back of the net to leave 11 points between the sides. Mount Sion pulled themselves together and a point from the placed ball from Ken McGrath and points from Martin O’Neill left 7 between the sides. Mount Sion closed the gap further to 3 points before Tallow broke through for their third goal of the game. Mount Sion pushed on to narrow the deficit to 2 points, with a free from Ian Power and points from Sean Ryan and Eoin McGrath. Tallow finished the game with a point from a free to leave the sides 3 points apart. Final score Cnoc Sion 0-16 to Tallow 3-10. The next senior championship game is this Saturday the 31st at 7.30pm in Walsh Park.
Intermediate Hurling
Our intermediates faced Ballygunner last Saturday in their opening game of the championship. Dan Kelly opened the scoring with the first of his five points before Michael Frisby added a point to Cnoc Sion’s tally. We led at half-time 0-9 to 0-3 thanks to points from Michael King, Mark Hoban and Dermot O’ Byrne. In the second half Dan Kelly scored Mount Sion’s only point with Ballygunner making a strong comeback. Some fine saves from Richie Roche and great work from Glenn Daniels, John Cleere and Jamie O’Meara kept us in it and we won out 0-10 to 1-6 winners. Next Saturday sees the intermediates taking on Clonea in Kill at 2.30pm.
Junior Hurling
The junior hurlers kicked off their championship against De La Salle Thursday evening last. In the opening few minutes Bryan Power broke through for Cnoc Sion’s only goal of the game. They added points from Brian Hessessey and Aaron Dempsey. De La Salle hit back with several points but Cnoc Sion led at the break. Cnoc Sion continued their dominance, however midway through the half De La Salle produced a fight back, to leave a goal between the sides. A 21 yard free was awarded to De La Salle, which was blasted to the net to leave the sides level. With 2 minutes remaining Cnoc Sion went a point up, from a great strike from substitute Rory Sheridan. De La Salle produced another comeback to eventually share the spoils. There were some great performances throughout especially from the 3 half backs, young minors, Stephen O’Neill and Craig Sauvage and the experienced Eoin Fanning at centre-back. The juniors are back in action next Friday the 30th April at 7pm against Clonea in Clonea.
