Bro Dowling Cup Tournament
Last Tuesday saw a fantastic day’s Under 12 hurling as four CBS schools from the south east met to commemorate our former school principal, the late Brother Dowling.
In perfect conditions for hurling Mount Sion met Callan CBS and Kilkenny CBS played their Carrick counterparts in two semi finals. The Monastery boys started slowly and Callan set the pace with two early points. However the Mount Sion defenders, led brilliantly by Ben Sinnott and Jack Whelan, Sion took control and began to dominate the exchanges. The forwards began to get great possession and Daire Barry and Jake Mooney began to wreak havoc, ably supported by young Evan McGrath and Charlie Costello. At half time Mount Sion found themselves four points up and were in a strong position as they would be assisted by a strong wind in the second half.
The second half was only two minutes old when great work by Ben Flanagan found Charlie Costello in behind the Callan full back line and Charlie kept his composure to rattle the net for another goal. Substitute Jordan Roche quickly added a super point and Mount Sion didn’t look back. They produced a storming second half to keep Callan scoreless and run out convincing winners.
Following their victory over Carrick in the other semi final Kilkenny CBS were our opponents in the final. Having started slowly in the semi final the Mount Sion boys were determined to get out of the blocks quickly in the final. This they did and immediately took the game to the pre tournament favourites. Ben Flanagan and Michael Flynn were dominating the midfield exchanges and goalkeeper Eoghan Browne and full backs Jordan Hutchinson, Jack Whelan and Jonathan Flynn looked particularly solid. Sam Robinson was well on top at centre back and once again Jake Mooney’s pace was causing the Kilkenny backline huge problems. However two late goals in the first half kept the Kilkenny lads in touch. When the referee blew the half time whistle the Mount Sion boys had a mere four point lead as they prepared to face the stiff breeze in the second half.
The Kilkenny outfit emerged for the second half in determined mood and began to lay siege to the Mount Sion goal. Determined defending by Tunmise Sobowale and Eoghan Browne in goal helped keep the Mount Sion goal intact. However, as the game wore on the great effort of the lads in the heat began to take its toll and the Kilkenny big guns began to dominate the key positions. The defence held tight however, led by Jonathan Flynn, Ben Sinnott and Jack Whelan and the Kilkenny lads were restricted to points as they narrowed the gap to a single point with the game entering its closing stages. With just four minutes left however the Kilkenny School finally breached Eoghan Browne’s goal to take a two point lead. The Mount Sion boys rallied and missed some good chances before Kilkenny, in the dying seconds added another goal to run out five point winners in a very exciting final of a very high standard.
The school was delighted with the presence of Brother Dowling’s family to present the medals to the boys on what was a very special and fitting tribute to a very special man. Well done to all the boys who competed. Thanks to all our visiting teams and their teachers. Thanks also to Davy, Peter, Dick, Michael and the Ladies’ Committee for all their help in making the day a huge success. Thanks also to Stephen Roche and Ricky Freeman for refereeing. This tournament is one we hope will go from strength to strength and I’m sure all the boys in the school are looking forward to next year’s tournament already.
