Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Senior Championship
The second round of the championship took place last Sunday in a windswept Walsh Park. Sion opted to start the game with the wind and took full advantage of it. Passage opened the scoring with a free and actually only managed to score 1 point from play in the whole game. Stephen Roche and Ken McGrath settled Sion nicely into the game with 2 points. Martin O’Neill was also on target from both the placed ball and from play. Further points from Ian Galgey, Ken McGrath, Stephen Roche and Owen Whelan gave Sion the lead at the break by 6 points.
The second half saw Passage had the breeze and they also used it to their advantage scoring more long range frees for some indiscipline from the Sion players. Ken McGrath and Martin O’Neill added two quick points for Sion but Passage knocked over 5 unanswered points to close the gap. Brian Cusack grabbed Sion’s last point of the match as the game entered its final minutes and set up a thrilling ending to what was a great game. Passage were awarded a penalty which was stopped on the line by Ian O’Regan and cleared by Tony Browne. Passage added two further points but Sion’s defence held strong and edged out “The Village” by the minimum margin, in what was a great encounter. Final score Mount Sion 0-12 to Passage 0-11. We would like to wish Ken McGrath and Ian Galgey a speedy recovery after they retired from the game early due to injuries.Intermediate Championship
The Intermediate game scheduled for Saturday evening against Ballydurn was called off and is due to be rescheduled. Details will be posted online or in the notes for next week.
Junior Championship
The Junior hurlers took on Passage in the opening round of the Junior Championship. We lost several of our key players to the intermediates last weekend but this side put in a great performance to come out winners. Sion dominated the first half, limiting Passage to scoring only 1 point in the opening half. Brian “Chick” Hennessey grabbed Sion’s only goal of the first half.In the second half a late surge by Passage produced 4 goals but weren’t good enough as Sion added goals from Dan Kelly and Rory Sheridan. With Patrick Bowe and Michael Power controlling the middle of the field and Dan Kelly and Barry Browne supplying some top quality finishing upfront, Sion finished the game out with 8 points to spare. Final score Mount Sion 3-17 to Passage 4-6. The next Championship date is 21st May against De La Salle. Pictures of the game are on the website.
Under 16
Our Philip Egan sponsored Under 16s took on Ballygunner for the second time this year but this time it was in the championship. 3 first half goals by the Gunners gave them the edge at half time. Sion restarted the second half faster with Austin Gleeson bagging himself 1-1 within 5 minutes of the restart. Ballygunner began to dominate and looked likely to run away with the game. To Sion’s credit the lads never put their heads down and fought to the end with Aidan Power and Austin Gleeson scoring to keep Sion in touch. 2 Super saves by the Ballygunner keeper kept both Austin Gleeson’s penalty and 21 metre free out to keep Ballygunner ahead and give them the win. Final score Mount Sion 3-10 to Ballygunner 4-14. Their next game is against De La Salle in De La Salle at 7pm on Monday 2nd May. Best of luck lads.Under 12

Both games ended in draws. Final score Mount Sion Blue 3-2 to De La Salle 3-2. Mount Sion White 6-5 to De La Salle 6-5.
