Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Life President
At the AGM back in January it was agreed that the incoming Executive would appoint an appropriate Life President and at the last Executive meeting it was unanimously agreed that Frankie Walsh would take up this position. May I congratulate Frankie on his appointment and wish him all the best.Ladies Footballers
Last Saturday afternoon the Ladies played the County Final in Fraher Field against St. Annes who we bet earlier in the league. Sion were without some key members who were absent either through injury or work commitments. St. Annes opened the scoring through a goal from the penalty spot. Lisa Dower responded with a goal moments later but St. Annes once again broke through the Sion defence to slot the ball to the back of the net. An inch perfect pass from Ciara Phelan to Trish Cleary ended in another goal for Sion. But Annes finished the first half out the stronger by tagging on 2 points and again scoring a goal from the penalty spot. Score at half time 2-0 to 3-2. Playing against all the elements in the second half Sion played the better football. Lisa “Mousey” Dower added 1-1 to Sion’s half time total within 5 minutes of the restart. But Annes added a point to keep their noses in front. Ciara Phelan converted a free but St. Annes pulled away once again with 3 points. Rachel Beckett finished to the net to set up a thrilling final few minutes. St. Annes kick no more than 2 wides and Sion looked likely to get a goal in the dying minutes but it wasn’t to be as St. Annes narrowly overcame our Ladies by the minimum margin. Final score Mount Sion 4-3 to St. Annes 3-7. Hard luck to the two Ian’s and all the girls. Championship is only around the corner so girls keep up the effort in training.Junior Hurling Championship
The second round of the Junior championship saw us take on De La Salle in Mount Sion. Sion opened the scoring about 7 minutes into the game where Lee Thornton slotted over a point but De La Salle’s first score of the game was a goal. They added a point moments later but failed to add anymore scores until the last minute of the first half where they scored another goal. De La Salle led at half time by 2-1 to Sion’s 0-2.The second half Sion had the wind at their backs. Sion tagged on a goal from Dan Kelly but De La Salle responded with a goal of their own. Again De La Salle capitalised on defensive errors by Sion to add 2 further goals. Over the half Sion added 9 points to their total, where De La Salle failed to add any points. However as time ran out De La Salle narrowly escaped winners by 2 points. Final score Mount Sion 1-11 to De La Salle 5-1.

Under 14
The Under 14s played the Eastern Semi-Final against Roanmore last Monday night. These young lads put in a brave effort but it was in vain against a much more experienced Roanmore side. We are back in championship again on Monday 23rd May against Cois Bhride in Mount Sion at 7:30pm.Under 11
The Under 11s played two City League games this week. The first one was on Wednesday where they took on Mooncoin after the game was called off due to the weather. Alan Kirwan, Jack Meaney and Jordan Roche were all on target with goals with further points from Charlie Costello and Luke O’Brien adding to Sion’s total. Some other players to shine were Thomas McLawrence, Shaun Brophy, Stephen Flynn and Ryan O’Connor. Final Score Mount Sion 3-8 to Mooncoin 0-4.The second game was on Friday where they faced the Gunners in Ballygunner. This was another entertaining game and the lads came out on top where they put in some great performances all over the field especially from Josh Fanning in the goal, Darragh Quinn and Eoghan Power. Final score Mount Sion 1-8 to Ballygunner 0-3.
Under 9
The Under 9s took part in a blitz in Ballygunner over the week. We had two teams involved and they played 6 games over the hour and a half of hurling. It was a great evening for it and the lads put in a great effort in all their games. Well done to everyone involved.
