Mount Sion Gaa Notes
Under 10
This little team made the long journey to Ballyduff Upper on Saturday afternoon to compete in the host clubs annual tournament. Last week we qualified to the next stage of the tournament. We played another round of group games where we lost out to Abbeyside which meant we proceeded to the Plate section of the tournament. We played Lismore in the Semi-Final, where we narrowly overcame them by 1 goal in what was a close encounter and we qualified for the Plate Final. They boys put in a tremendous team effort and we ran out winners over Cappoquin on a score-line of Mount Sion 1-13 to Cappoquin 1-0. Thanks to Ballyduff Upper for their invitation and well done again on organising such a great tournament. Also well done to all our little lads and let’s hope we keep up this great effort. Thanks to all the parents who travelled to see the lads and to their mentors Roy, Damien, Seamus, George and Shane.Under 8
The Under 8s took part in a blitz in Killure last Monday evening. We had three teams which were made up of our under 7 and 8s and they played 9 games over the evening against teams from De La Salle and Sacred Heart. We won 8 games and drew one against Sacred Heart. It was a nice evening for it and the lads put in a superb effort in all their games. It was great to see so many parents present to cheer on the kids. Well done to al the lads and mentors Michael Frisby, John McGrath, John O’Keeffe and Eric Curran.Champs Week
It was yet again another great Champs Week in Mount Sion Primary School. The week was full of events to keep the whole school busy. There were 6 Yard League Finals along with Blitzes for the younger children, Quizzes and a special presentation to Ken McGrath marking his retirement from Inter-County hurling. Also during the week the Under 11 team made it all the way to the final where they were unlucky on the day and lost out to St. Declans in Walsh Park. I must congratulate Principal Michael Walsh and his staff for organising such a great event.Sargent Cup
Tuesday night saw us take on the County & Munster Champions, De La Salle in the Semi-Final of the Sargent Cup. Due to a number of players been away with county commitments we were well under strength. However you must admire the player’s spirit and effort where they led at half time by 2 points after coming from behind and Gavin Carroll and Dermot O’Byrne both grabbing goals in the first half. In the second half De La Salle began to show their dominance by knocking over 6 unanswered points and also getting a goal. But points from Robert Breslin, Barry Ryan, Brian Cusack and Martin F. O’Neill reduced the difference to finish the game up with just 4 between the sides. Final score Mount Sion 2-11 to De La Salle 2-15.Intermediate
The Intermediates played their second game of the championship last Friday night in a sundrenched Walsh Park. Erins Own set the early pace of the game by knocking over 2 points. Dermot O’Byrne opened Sion’s account in the 4th minute and traded scores with Erins Own from the placed ball. Mark Hoban added a further point before Richie Roche got Sion’s first goal. Erins Own responded with two points of their own, but O’Byrne again pointed, to put Sion further into the lead. Half Time score: Mount Sion 1-6 to Erins Own 0-7. After the break, Erins Own quickly drew level but Richie Roche regained our lead. Erins Own added another 3 points before Dermot O’Byrne added one for Sion. Richie Murphy grabbed a goal for the Blue & White. With a beaming Sun in the eyes of Sion keeper Philly Flynn, a long ball from a free evaded Philly and ended up in the back of the net. Robert Breslin and Richie Roche added points for Sion but Erins Own finished the game out and did the rest of the scoring including adding a second goal to run out winners by 6 points. Final score Mount Sion 2-11 to Erins Own 2-17.Best of luck
Best of luck to Waterford who takes on Limerick in the Munster Championship next Sunday 12th June in Semple Stadium, Thurles. We have a few players involved, Tony Browne, Eoin McGrath and Christopher Ryan. Best of luck to all.Speedy Recovery
We would like to wish Josh Fanning a speedy recovery after he broke a bone in his wrist over the week. Josh is a great little goalie on our Under 11 team and we hope to see you back training and playing soon.
Under 12
Both our Under 12 teams were in action this week. On Monday evening the Blue Team took on Sacred Heart in Mount Sion. Our lads applied themselves well and we got goals from Louie Halligan, Evan McGrath, Jonathan Flynn and Eoghan Browne. Other players to stand out on the night were Aaron Healy, James Ogundare and Tommy McGrath. Final score Mount Sion 6-6 to Sacred Heart 0-2. Well done lads keep up the excellent work-rate.On Tuesday our White Team travelled to Ballygunner. This was by far our toughest match yet. Ballygunner dominated most of the exchanges and ran out comfortable winners in the end.
