Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Junior Championship
The Junior hurlers played their third game of the championship against close rivals Roanmore in their new Gracedieu grounds last Wednesday evening. The lads put in a super effort with Sion hitting the net from Barry Browne in the first half and Dan Kelly in the second. Roanmore were reduced to 14 men at the end of the first half but they led at half time by the minimum margin. Roanmore battled hard in the second half but Sion pulled away in the last 15 minutes of the half to run out winners by 4 points. Final score Mount Sion 2-12 to Roanmore 1-11.Under 10
After recently winning the shield final in the Ballyduff Upper Tournament, these bunch of lads were back on the road and travelled to Newtownshandrum in Cork last Saturday morning. The team worked very hard in all their games and they accounted for Mungret, Ballyhea and Dr. Crokes to book a place in the final. The lads upped their work rate in the final where we battled against a gale force breeze to outscore the host club Newtownshandrum in what was a tough but very exciting final. Final score Mount Sion 4-4 to Newtownshandrum 1-0. Well done to all the lads who travelled and that put in such a great effort. A big thanks to Newtownshandrum for their invitation to take part in this well run tournament. Also thanks to all the parents who travelled to cheer on the lads, your support is always welcomed. The Panel on the day was Peter Nolan, Ogusha Osaraime, Kieran Hanrahan, Conor Meaney, Josh Fanning, PJ Fanning, Scott Byrne, Timmy Sobowale, PJ Murphy, Cian O’Grady, Jamie Gleeson, Ben Frisby, Samuel Mathe, Stephen Finn, Conor Freeman (Capt), Ronan Quinn, Kaelin Wall, Daniel Murphy and Ben Ryan. This little team is definitely one to watch for the future.Mum & Me
Last Wednesday we held our very first camogie event within the club called ‘Mum & Me”. It turned out to be a great success with a turn-out of 17 girls with both mums and dads getting involved. All the girls had a great time with lots of fun activates, skills and games. Well done to all coaches who turned up to help. Training for the girls will continue this Saturday at noon until 1 and ”Mum and Me” will continue Wednesdays at 6:30pm to 7:30pm. Again spread the word to family members and friends! All newcomers welcome, hurleys and helmets can be supplied.Condolences
We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family of Gerry O’Carroll. Gerry served as our stock-controller for over 14 years and passed away over the week. Our thoughts are with his wife and children at this sad time. Ar dheis de go raibh Siad.
Primary School are Brother Dowling Cup Champions for 2011
The Brother Dowling Cup has returned to Mount Sion Primary School following last week’s competition in Pairc Ó Fainín on Thursday last. This prestigious competition has grown from strength to strength since the Dowling family kindly donated a magnificent trophy in 2008 to honour the memory of the lat great Brother Dowling who was instrumental in the development of some of our finest hurlers during his time in the primary school. This year’s competition involved four CBS hurling nurseries from the South East, Callan CBS, Carrick on Suir CBS and Kilkenny CBS. The hurling from all four teams was superb and at the end of the day Jonathan Flynn proudly lifted the cup after a brilliant victory over reigning champions Kilkenny CBS in the final.
Earlier in the day the Monastery boys had to pull out all the stops to overcome a stubborn Callan CBS challenge. Leading by twelve points at one stage with the help of goals from Ben Sinnott, Evan McGrath, Bill Wall and Daniel Jacob, we had to withstand a late rally from the Kilkenny men to hold on for a narrow victory.
In the final we met Kilkenny CBS who had beaten us in a thrilling game at the same stage last year. However this year things were different and fro the throw in Mount Sion took the game to their bigger opponents and took control of the game. Super performances from the backs including Charlie Costello, Tommy McGrath, Ivan Sinnott, young Eoghan Power and Sacred Heart’s Sam Robinson was the foundation for the win. Aaron Healy in goals shows huge promise as a netminder of the future and his confidence was crucial. The Flynn’s Michael and Jonathan proved themselves real leaders of this team and their dominance in the centre of proceedings was vital. The pace and power of Tunmise Sobowale, who continues to show rapid improvement meant that the Kilkenny lads could not get a foothold in the game. In the forwards, all contributed hugely but none more so than young Evan McGrath whose work rate and skill stretched the Cat’s defence at will. Ben Sinnott, in a new position of full forward was a huge threat and the skill and pace of Jordan Halpin in the corner was remarked upon by many of the onlookers at the game. Daniel Jacob, returning after a brief absence from hurling was hugely important and provided vital scores. Eoghan Browne played with great confidence and proved a real handful for his marker and ten year old Scott Hoban proved he was well able to mix it with the older boys! Others to shine were the hugely improved James Ogundare, under 11 sharpshooter Jordan Roche, Sacred Heart’s Seán Troy and another under 11 prospect Bill Wall.
Having put in a tremendous display of skill and work rate, Mount Sion emerged victorious by 5-03 to 1-01. The cup was presented to captain Jonathan Flynn in the clubhouse by the proud relatives of Brother Dowling and Brother Peadar Gleeson of the Mount Sion congregation reminded the boys of the traditions of their schools and of the greatness of our games! Well done to all the boys, a great end to a great year of school hurling.
The school wishes to thank Michael Ryan and his staff, Betty Forrestal, Josie Evans, Anne Hammond and the Ladies’ Committee and Davy Carroll and the ground staff for all their help in making this tournament a great success.

Munster Final
Well done to the Waterford Minors who overcame Limerick after extra-time in the Munster Semi-Final last Saturday night. The game was very exciting from start to finish with Waterford gaining a massive 12 point lead early in the first half. But to Limericks credit they fought back to tie the game up and send it to extra time where Waterford ran out winners by 5 points. Well done to everyone and I’m sure all of us Waterford people are looking forward to seeing both a minor and senior team in the Munster Final on July 10th. Best of luck to all involved.
