Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Junior Hurling Championship
The Junior hurlers continued where they left off last year with a good win over near rivals De La Salle in the Cleaboy venue. The home side got off to a better start with two points but a point from Austin Gleeson opened Sion’s account. Again De La Salle pointed but Sion took over with Gavin Carroll pointing and Captain Dan Kelly hitting the net and adding two points. De La Salle traded points with Gleeson and we went in two points up at half time. Gleeson started where he left off, and rivalled over within minutes of the restart. The home side replied. From the puck out, a superb catch by Jonathan Hayes and a just as equal finish pushed Sion further into the lead. Within another two minutes Hayes again stretched the lead. Gleeson converted a free with Kelly sending over two more points. De La Salle scored only their second and last point in the half. Pat McGrath struck over from the middle of the field with Sion’s other scores coming from Gleeson (2), Pappy Bowe (2) and Carroll with Shane Flynn finishing the scoring having been sprung from the bench. A 21 yard free against Sion was saved by the Sion keeper as the referee Nicholas O’Toole blew for full time. Final score Mount Sion 1-18 to De La Salle 0-8. Our next Championship game is on Thursday 5th April at 6:45pm in Passage against Passage. Hope to see just as big a crowd up to support the lads!!Mount Sion School Mini 7’s Team
The recent run of good form for the school teams continued when the under 12 seven a side team qualified for the Eastern Finals. To qualify they had to overcome a gallant Scoil Lorcáin side and a very strong Ballygunner team in McGinn Park last Tuesday.
The performance of Timi Sobowale in goal proved that he has more strings to his bow than an outfield player. Bill Wall and Oisín Daly in defence were towers of strength throughout. Young Scott Hoban in midfield was solid throughout and his partner, Charlie Costello was player of the day with his never ending work rate and intelligent play. Up front, young Eoghan Power was a constant threat and scored the goal of the day with a superb finish after great play from Daly and Costello. Jordan Roche however showed just what he can do when on form when he was constantly there to convert the build up play with some cracking goals. The youngest player on the panel, PJ Fanning proved a super sub on each occasion he was introduced, scoring a vital 1-01 at vital stages.
Well done to all the panel and their club coaches who are improving these lads all the time. They now play the Eastern Finals on Tuesday next today (27th March) in De la Salle Gracdieu. This very young team will be up against it against St Declans, Newtown, Ferrybank and Portlaw in the finals but no doubt they will give it their all once again.
Brother Rice Annual 1SU Shield
The Primary School brought back their second trophy of the year to Barrack Street when they won the Brother Rice ISU competition last Thursday in Mount Sion Grounds. Nine teams from all over the South East took part in this 9 a side tournament. After a wonderful afternoon’s hurling where the Monastery side accounted for Glór na Mara, New Ross CBS, Callan CBS and St Paul’s in a superb final to lift the trophy.Captain James Ogundare played a captain’s role throughout and formed part of a defence where young PJ Murphy excelled in goal and the ever improving Alex Madigan and Sacred Heart’s twin towers of Seán Troy and Sam Robinson were outstanding. Ten year old Timi Sobowale played beyond his years in midfield in supporting player of the tournament Evan McGrath throughout. The forwards of Ben le Blanc, Jordan Halpin, Samuel Mathe and newcomer Kris Mauresan were a handful for every defence.
Well done to the boys. Their discipline and effort throughout the day was a credit to themselves and the school. Thanks to Waterford Coaching and Games and Brother Kevin of Edmund Rice Centre for organising a great festival of hurling.
