Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Mount Sion Fun Run
The 5 Mile Road Race was a huge success with over 150 runners taking part. First home was Patrick Hogan from Ferrybank AC in time of 26:57. First woman home was Sylvia Malone from Waterford AC. The first club member home was William Ormond in a time of 31:56. Followed closely by Tony Quinlan, Wayne Ryan and Owen Whelan. Well done to all those who took part and we really appreciate all those who helped to make it such a success. Full times of the runners are on the website, on the Road Run Page under the News Tab. http://mountsiongaa.ie/news/fun-run-road-race-2012/ Pictures are also put up in the Gallary.Junior Hurling Championship
We travelled to Passage last Thursday night in our quest for our second win in the championship. The side that fielded included several positional and personnel changes to the side that defeated De La Salle in the opening round. After a very wasteful opening five minutes Sion finally hit the target through Darren Finn and Dan Kelly. Passage replied and drew level but a super strike from Johnny Hayes put Sion ahead once more. A mix up in the Sion defence ended in a goal for “The Village”. Gavin Carroll hit a brace of points for Sion with Kelly repeating the same from the placed ball. Ricky Freeman had an excellent goal chance but just as equal save from the Passage keeper deflected the ball over the bar. Sion finished out the half with four points to spare. In the second half, Sion played against the breeze and scores from both sides were hard to come by. Pat McGrath popped up for his first of the game and Kelly added another one to his total. Passage replied but points from Carroll and Freeman put Sion further in the driving seat. A goal by the “youthful” Eoin Fanning finished the game and left the score, Mount Sion 1-16 to Passage 1-7. Well done lads. The next Championship game is against Dunhill in our own pitch next Friday night at 6:45pm. We hope to see a good crowd up to cheer on the lads!! Best of luck!Senior League
Our first competitive outing in a Waterford Competition this year was against Roanmore in Gracedieu in the Senior League. It was great to get off to a good start with our lads overwhelming the home side. The “Sky Blues” opened the scoring within the opening two minutes but the clinical Martin O’Neill eased Sion into the game with a successful pointed free. Jamie O’Meara (2), Owen Whelan and Ian Galgey also tagged on points. Roanmore replied with a brace of points but County Senior Hurler Martin O’Neill edged Sion further into the lead with three points. Sion led by nine points to four at half time. After the break O’Neill pointed but a Roanmore fight back was easily overcome with half time substitute Gavin Carroll hitting the net within four minutes. Roanmore pointed with Galgey cancelling it out. Robert Breslin broke through the Roanmore defence for his first well taken goal. He added a point moments later before a classic O’Neill score, on the run up the sideline pushed us into a twelve point lead. Ken McGrath got his name on the score-sheet midway through the half and Roanmore pointed to bring their total to nine. A brilliant pass from Michael Gaffney in the middle of the field to Robert Breslin, ended in another green flag been raised. Sion finished the scoring with McGrath getting two more points and Owen Whelan getting his second. Final score Mount Sion 3-22 to Roanmore 0-12. Well done lads, good win. Next up…Lismore next Saturday in Mount Sion at 7pm. This will double up as a Senior League/Sargent Cup game. This game promises to be another good game. So come up and support the lads.
