Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Mount Sion Fun Run
A mix up in last week’s results. Ben Flanagan was the first youth home in a time of 31:56. Well done Ben, great achievement!!Feile Under 14
A brilliant Semi-Final game was enjoyed by all who went to Cleaboy last Tuesday evening! With the rain holding off for most of the game, both teams provided some great hurling and little separated the sides at full time. Of course the meetings of old rivals Mount Sion and Ballygunner at any age always serves up a good game and this was no exception. Sion played with the wind in the opening half and had most of the possession but failed to make it count on the scoreboard. Michael Flynn got things going with a fine pointed free. Matthew Butler was very unlucky when his Goal shot cut past the wrong side of the post to go wide. Young Evan McGrath’s brilliant shot gave the Ballygunner keeper no hope and sent Sion into a 1-1 to 0-0 lead. Louis Halligan and Michael Flynn added points each to give Sion a good 1-3 to 0-0 score at half time, but with a strong breeze was this enough to edge out the men in black and red? From the whistle the Gunners immediately signalled their intent to stay in this competition with a quick goal and two point to cut Sion’s lead to just a single point. The hard working Johnny Flynn gave Sion that little cushion with a point. Substitute Ryan Denton was causing real hassle for the Ballygunner defence with his excellent high catching and was denied a goal with a save from the Ballygunner keeper. Sion’s defence stood strong with the serious pressure imposed by the Gunner’s attack but a Michael Flynn goal sealed a brilliant victory to set up an Eastern Feile Final with De La Salle on Tuesday 17th April at 6:15pm. Final score Mount Sion 2-4 to Ballygunner 1-2. Best of luck lads. We’ll all be down to watch ye!!Junior Hurling Championship
Our third game in the championship was against Dunhill in our own pitch. We started well with Ricky Freeman hitting two points within the first two minutes of the game. Chick Hennessey got his first start and struck over for his first point. Dunhill opened their account but Captain Dan Kelly and Hennessey put Sion further ahead. Dunhill hit back with three pointed frees but the combination of Michael “Pugs” Power and Hennessey popped up for two points each to give Sion an 0-11 to 0-4 lead at half time. First goal of the game came just seconds into the second half with Darren Finn scrambling the ball over the line. Dunhill hit their only point of the half, before Pugs Power hit two fine points and got Sion’s best goal with a wonderful strike to give the Dunhill keeper no chance. Jess Kehoe also hit home a goal from long range. Dan Kelly got his fourth point with fifteen minutes left on the clock. A long range free from keeper Owen Sauvage added another point to Sion’s tally! Kelly was in fine scoring form adding another two and corner back Shane Twomey also got his name on the score sheet! Substitute Shane Coleman cut in from the right and slapped over with Kelly finishing out the scoring to give Sion an emphatic win and leave the score. Mount Sion 3-20 to Dunhill 0-5. Well done lads! Next up Ballygunner on 5th May.Under 12 City League
We also faced Ballygunner in the Under 12 City League last Friday night. We started well scoring 1-1 with Jack Meaney pointing and Ryan O’Connor getting the goal. Ballygunner replied with a point but Sion hit the net via Jack Meaney. Ballygunner got a point back just before the break for Sion to led by 2-1 to 0-2. Ballygunner stated strong in the second half scoring 1-1 without reply and our lads were under severe pressure but battled on and got the next score with a point. Ballygunner drew the game Level with a well taken goal but Jordan Roche edged the home side back in front with a point. Ballygunner banged in their third goal and a point to go ahead by the minimum margin with minutes left on the clock. Sion nearly set up camp in the Ballygunner goal but just couldn’t get the ball over the line to get that deserved goal. Alas time ran but it was another great game and well done to both teams for their great performances on the night. Final score Mount Sion 2-3 to Ballygunner 3-3. Scores Ryan O’Connor 1 goal, Jack Meaney 1-1 and Jordan Roche 0-2. Next game we play is Friday week against De La Salle. Hopefully we can get another big crowd up to see the lads play. Best luck!!Senior League
Due to the Under 21s unavailability on Saturday, this game between Mount Sion and Lismore went ahead on Sunday afternoon. This fixture doubled up for both the Senior League and Sargent Cup to save teams playing again in less than a week’s time. Lismore shot into the lead with a point but Sion’s Robert Breslin replied on the third minute. Moments later Breslin made a surging run through the Lismore defence and popped a pass to Eoin McGrath who knocked over for our second point. Big brother Ken was in excellent form and hit his first point of the game. Breslin again broke through the westerners defence and smacked home from close range. Again young McGrath pointed and Ian Galgey was waiting and ready to bang home a goal. Lismore replied with two points but a Ken McGrath goal and point kept Sion running further into the lead. Lismore were awarded a penalty but Maurice Shanahan’s shot was deflected over the bar by Tony Browne. McGrath pointed again and a quick 65 pass to Stephen Roche gave Sion a twelve point lead. However, Lismore finished out the half with four points. Lismore again got the first point of the half. But again McGrath was flying flicking over three points. Stephen Roche’s dropping ball fell past the keeper and he flicked the ball over his own line. Tony Browne landed a long range point with an excellent strike. Hard working Jamie O’Meara and Michael Gaffney each got a point before a magnificent sideline cut from the halfway line from John Dee sailed over the bar. Ken McGrath finished his high scoring tally of 1-11 with left hand strike over the bar. Midfield partners Owen Whelan and Michael Gaffney both pointed and Ian Galgey showed some great control and skill to add a point to his goal. Lismore pointed but substitutes Anthony Kirwan and Aaron Dempsey both pointed to finish off the game and leave the score Mount Sion 4-24 to Lismore 0-16. Well done lads, good win.Camogie League
Our second ever Junior Camogie game as a club took place last Sunday morning where Tallow were our opponents. In the early minutes we missed some great goal chances but a Marie Therese point seemed to settle the girls into the game. A silly mistake in the back line gave Tallow an easy goal. A well found pass from Joanne King to Amy O’Sullivan ended in a goal for the Sion. Marie Therese got a great point but minutes later Joanne missed a great goal chance from close range. Midway through the half Amy knocked home her second goal after a great catch. Working hard in the middle of the field, Orla O’Neill found Amy to add a point to her personal tally. Marie Therese again pointed but Tallow scored a quick goal after a break for an injury to give Sion a four point lead at half time. We had to wait ten minutes for the first score in the second half but a great sideline from Tallow cut the lead to three. Joanne finally hit the net with a great strike to give the keeper no chance. Tallow got one back and also added a point. They also added one more point with two minutes left but Amy O’Sullivan cancelled it out when she sent over for her third point of the day. Well done to all our girls and to Tallow who travelled up for a very sporting game. Our backs played very well with Yvonne Murphy exceptional at full back and Jean Dooley growing in confidence at centre back. Here was the team. Kayleigh Sutton, Kim Delahunty, Yvonne Murphy, Karin Durand, Zoe Delahunty, Jean Dooley, Sarah Kennedy, Orla O’Neill, Siobhan Heffernan, Robyn Foley, Marie There O’Neill, Lisa Dooley, Joanne King and Amy O’Sullivan.Kelloggs Cul Camp
