Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Speedy Recovery
Best wishes to John Dee who broke his hand during the week, big loss to the Seniors. Hope to see you back playing soon John!Senior Hurling Championship
We faced Dunhill in round two of the Senior Championship last Sunday afternoon. The first half started with great intensity with both teams trading points from frees with Sion’s Martin O’Neill against Eamonn Murphy from Dunhill. It was in the third minute the first goal chance came for Sion with a lovely flick from Eoin McGrath to big brother Ken but ended in a sixty-five for Sion which was sent wide. Sion seemed to be playing some nice hurling with the brother duo of the McGrath settling Sion two points clear after five minutes. The sharp Dunhill corner forward created a great goal chance but took the safer option and tapped the ball over the bar to reduce it to the minimum. It was from here Mount Sion started to dominate with goal chances from Robert Bresnan and Austin Gleeson both hitting the crossbar. Martin O’Neill and Eamonn Murphy once again traded blows from the dead ball, with ten minutes to go in the first half Robert Breslin made a great run through to hand the ball off to Anthony Kirwan who forced a great save from the Dunhill keeper which from the rebound Gleeson threw the ball over the bar from the sideline. From there Dunhill hit back with three unanswered points from Murphy (2 frees) until Sion finally made the break through, a wonderful cross field ball from Kenny Stafford to Robert Bresnan and from 25 yards out he fired the ball into the bottom corner to give the Dunhill keeper no chance of saving it. From the resulting puck out O’Neill instantly replied with another point, and once again from the following puck-out O’Neill caught the ball from 80 yards out and fired a huge score for Sion to put them four up. In the final minute of the first half O’Neill and Murphy both pointed a free each to leave Sion four up at half time.
The first five minutes of the second half, Sion flew out of the traps with three unanswered points and that duo of Eoin McGrath to Ken once again forced the Dunhill keeper to pull off a save which seemed to give Dunhill that lift they needed. Two Murphy frees and a goal from Paul Doyle put Dunhill in the diving seat and within two of Mount Sion. O’Neill replied with a free but from there it was all Dunhill and within another five minutes they had scored four points and left Sion needing to up their game. Martin O’Neill tried to get Sion engine going again with a point but Dunhill hit back with three of their own to go three up with only thirty seconds left on the clock. Austin Gleeson did have a super chance from the 21 but the Dunhill keeper pulled off a wonderful save to tap it over the bar and give his side a historic two point victory. Final score Mount Sion 1-16 to Dunhill 1-18.
Intermediate Hurling Championship
This week we faced Ferrybank on Saturday afternoon in Walsh Park. Playing with the breeze in the opening half our lads set about their business from the off when Gavin Carroll pointed from a free within the opening minute. Ferrybank replied almost immediately with a point of their own to get them off the mark. Another Carroll free fell short of its target and landed in the hand of the Ferrybank keeper who fumbled and Brian Cusack made no mistake as he finished to the net from close range. Michael Power shot over but Ferrybank replied. The dynamic Ian Power found Cusack in open space and he added a point to his tally. Ferrybank pointed two but Gavin Carroll edged Sion slightly in front again with another point. The opposition again scored two with Cusack again nudging Sion two points clear. Just at the break Ferrybank pointed from a sixty-five to narrow the margin to a single point. Now facing into the breeze, Sion got the first score through Michael Power now operating from his usual midfield position. Again a reply followed from Ferrybank. Sion pointed through Carroll but Ferrybank replied with two excellent scores both from the stand side in Walsh Park. Sion keeper Richie Roche was quickly called upon and made two great saves. Both sides hit points and in the closing stages a foul on a Sion player resulted in a 21 one yard free, with no option but to go for goal to level up the game. Carroll’s shot was easily saved and the clearance drove the Ferrybank on as they tagged on two final scores to run out the winners. Final score Mount Sion 1-8 to Ferrybank 0-15.Under 12 City League
Last Friday night we went to Glenmore to take on Glenmore. It was a tough game but we led at half time by a goal, 1-4 to 1-1. With Sion getting their scores through Jordan Roche (2), PJ Murphy, Alan Kirwan a goal and just on half time, Jack Meaney pointed. The game was quickly brought back level, five minutes into the second half with the Kilkenny side getting a goal. Some hard work in the defence by Luke O’Brien, Bill Wall, Oisin Daly, Eoghan Power steadied the ship. Alan Kirwan and Charlie Costello’s work ethic could not be faulted and got us back on top, along with PJ Murphy, Scott Hoban, PJ Fanning, Darragh Quinn and Thomas McLawrence in attack all giving it 100%. Two further goals from Roche and Jack Meaney swung the game in our favour and a point from Jordan sealed the win. Josh Fanning pulled off a miraculous save from point blank range midway through the second half with only a goal between the sides. Well done to all our young lads on this great win and to Glenmore on a very sporting game. Panel on the night: Josh Fanning, Thomas McLawrence, Eoghan Power, Oisin Daly, Luke O’Brien, Bill Wall, Charlie Costello, Alan Kirwan, Scott Hoban, PJ Fanning, PJ Murphy, Darragh Quinn, Jack Meaney and Jordan Roche.
Junior Hurling Championship
We made the short journey to Cleaboy to take on Roanmore in the fifth round of the Championship last Friday night. A very disappointing display, silly mistakes and indiscipline cost us the game. In the opening half we started well with points from Dan Kelly, Jonathan Hayes, Brian Hennessey, Eoin Fanning and Bryan Power getting in an early lead. But some wayward shooting and indiscipline was severely punished with Noelie Power from Roanmore easily pointing five points in the opening half. Sion led at half time by four points. In the second half, Roanmore pointed again from a free. Jess Kehoe continued his run of form from wingback, scoring a point. A Kelly point followed but Roanmore capitalised on a stupid error within the Sion square and struck home a goal. Kelly again pointed but Roanmore had the wind in their sails with three more points and another goal. Kelly went point for point with Power from frees but Roanmore ran in five points in the closing stages to crush any comeback from Sion. Final score Mount Sion 0-18 to Roanmore 2-19. We still have five rounds left in this ten round championship. We have four of them at home and one away to Dunhill. Next game is against De La Salle on Thursday 24th May in Mount Sion at 7:30pm.
