Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Junior Football Championship
Keeping up their winning ways, the Junior Footballers held on for the narrowest of victories over Roanmore last Friday night. Starting with the wind in the first half, Stephen Roche picked off Sion’s first score just three minutes in. Roanmore did reply but the remaining scores of this half all came from the monastery men. These scores came through young Bryan Power, Daniel Kelly and Sion newcomer John O’Leary, who was a big addition to the team. Big man Shane Forristal blasted home a well taken goal just on half time to give Sion a six point lead.In the second half, Roanmore capitalised on the strong breeze sweeping down the pitch into the club. They pointed two quick points to narrow the lead. Corner Forward Richie Roche crossed a dangerous ball across the Roanmore goal when the ball fell to Forristal, who volleyed the ball wide. Michael Frisby was dead accurate from the placed ball as he got his name on the score sheet. A Jess Kehoe foul on the 45, coupled with a quick free by Roanmore, led to the opposition running through and cracking home a goal. Some more quick passing by the sky blues led to another point and cut the lead to a single point. A floating ball into the edge of the Roanmore square was deflected into the back of the net by Eoin Swift. Roanmore didn’t give in and were quick to erase the three point lead and subsequently overtook the Sion boys. Ian “Bomb” Power was sprung from the bench and when Sion were awarded a penalty on the twenty-fourth minute, up he stepped, making no mistake, placing the ball in the bottom right hand corner of the goal. Sion were back in the lead. In the closing minutes, Sion had a good chance but Frisby ended it with putting the ball wide. Now with the game heading into injury time and with two points the margin, Roanmore had no other option but to seek a goal. Sion upped their work rate and the defence held out all Roanmore attempts at goal. However, they did finally score but it came in the form of a point with the game four minutes into extra time and with the resulting kick out, referee Conor Ahearne blew up for full time. Final score Mount Sion 3-5 to Roanmore 1-10. Well done lads, great win and more importantly keeping the winning ways up in the football.
