After two disappointing rounds of the Senior Championship, we travelled to Fraher Field to take on the inform Fourmilewater. It took just forty seconds for the first score to come for the western club. They added another point through Shane Walsh minutes later. Robert Bresnan pointed for Sion on two minutes to open our account. Martin O’Neill levelled up the game with Ian Galgey also pointing. Sion’s first blow came when Sion were awarded a free out inside the twenty-one. But after some afters, referee Paul Foley decided to throw the ball in. Shane Walsh gathered the ball and headed towards goal and finished to the net. Ian O’Regan found Eoin McGrath from the resulting puck out who passed to big brother Ken to pick off a point for the monastery men. Ian Galgey was handed a brilliant goal chance but it was saved by the Fourmile keeper and cleared by their defence. Fourmile hit three unanswered scores with Eoin McGrath pointing when a goal chance was on offer. Again two points from the westerners extended their lead. Sion were awarded a twenty-one yard free which was saved on the line. Both teams exchanged points with Sion pointing through Tony Browne and Martin O’Neill. Sion trailed at half time by 0-7 to 1-10. The second half saw the introduction of Martin F. O’Neill who was taken down as he headed towards goal in first twenty seconds of the restart. The other Martin O’Neill pointed from the free. He added another two before Tony Browne batted down the ball from a puck out with a Fourmile player waiting and ready for the breaking ball to send FMW further into the lead. A great burst out of defence by Pat Kelly who hand-passed to Bresnan who narrowly sent the ball wide. O’Regan was quickly called upon in the Sion goal and provided a top class save which was cleared by Owen Whelan. Another pointed free from O’Neill was quickly erased with Shane Walsh adding two. Pat Kelly was sent to the line when he was given no option to take a man down as he was bearing down on the Sion goal. Fourmile pointed two more points, before Sion got a goal when Martin O’Neill lobbed the ball into the Fourmile square when the keeper touched ball into his own net. An aimless hand pass by a Sion player to a Fourmile player started the chain reaction, with Shane Walsh goaling and securing another win for his side. Final score Mount Sion 1-12 to Fourmilewater 2-15.Intermediate Hurling Championship
Second game of the week saw the Intermediates take on Erins Own in a sun drenched Walsh Park on Friday evening. It took twelve minutes into the game for Sion to register their first score, with Dermot O’Byrne pointing. We did have chances up to this stage but were poorly taken advantage of. Erin’s Own continued with the run of play with another five unanswered points, three of which were from play. Shane Twomey found Darren Finn who added Sion’s second score. On the twenty fifth minute the first of two goals came for our opponents, the first came from well out the pitch, which bounced through the tussling of the full back and full forward and ended up in the back of the net. The second came on the stroke of half time, when Sion keeper Richard Roche saved but the rebound gave him no chance. Sion trailed by 0-2 to 2-7 at half time. At half time, Sion introduced Shane Forristal to the goal, with Roche now operating in the half forward line. Erins Own hit the first score with Michael Frisby finding the target from a free. The inner city side replied with a well taken point from down the left wing. Niall O’Sullivan pointed with Cusack aimlessly shooting wide from the corner flag. Frisby again was accurate from the placed ball with Roche scoring a great point on the forty-five. Exchanges between Erins Own and Frisby and a point from Peter Penkert cut the margin to two goals. A ball lobbed into the square was deemed mistakenly by referee Michael Wadding to be in violation of square ball as Roche flicked the ball to the net. What an interesting three minutes we could have been in for if the goal was given. But none the less, Erins Own again pointed late on to run out comfortable winners. Final score Mount Sion 0-10 to Erins Own 2-12.Junior Hurling Championship
Junior Hurlers got back to winning ways with a good win over De La Salle in Mount Sion last Thursday night. A piercing run by Johnny Hayes in the opening minutes who passed the ball to Chick Hennessey, who finished to the net. Dan Kelly pointed, but a foul on the Sion twenty-one yard line was punished and De La Salle goaled and added a point seconds later. A run across the end line by a De La Salle forward and with no defender coming to intercept Sion keeper left his goal line and the ball was finished to the net. Captain Kelly pointed again this time from a free. Hennessey pointed with De La Salle replying. Minor hurler Mark Flanagan pointed with Darren Finn setting up Dan Kelly with a good run through the De La Salle defence. Sion led by the minimum margin at half time. In the second half De La Salle pointed but Dan Kelly made no mistake in front of goal and finished clinically to the net. Patrick Bowe shot over with a great strike from the middle of the park. Kelly again added a point before a great assist by Hayes & Bowe to Kelly finished the ball to the net. De La Salle were reduced to fourteen men when their full back received a second yellow card. Again Kelly and the Cleaboy side exchanged points. De La Salle hit two points back from frees but Kelly finished off the scoring with another placed ball. Final score Mount Sion 3-10 De La Salle 2-7. Well done lads, next game not till middle of next month.Website Update
