Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Big Week ahead
Next Friday night we face Tallow in the fourth round of the Senior Hurling Championship in Fraher Field at 7:30pm. Best of luck lads!!Intermediate Hurling Championship
Round four of the Intermediate Championship took place last Saturday evening against Tramore in the main County Grounds, Walsh Park. Within fifteen seconds of the start Tramore had a point on the board. A Michael Frisby pointed free opened Sion’s account. Tramore ran in a five point lead. But Sion began to dominate with Full Forward Brian Cusack combining with Ian Power and pointing two points in succession. Michael Frisby tagged on a point again from a free. Aaron Coady sent over a point from the middle of the park with Cusack narrowing the margin to a single point. Captain Shane Twomey levelled up the game on the twentieth minute with a marvellous strike inside his own forty-five. Sion shot three frees wide in a row which may have come back to haunt them in the later stages of the game. Richie Roche made an excellent catch and kicked the ball to the sea-siders net. Sion led at the break by 1-7 to 0-7. In the second half, Sion were awarded two frees with the Bomb Power successfully converting with his unusual but effective free taking style. A save on the Sion goal line by Craig Sauvage ended in a throw ball as the ball got stuck in the middle of a group of players. Cusack again pointed Sion further into the lead with Tramore quickly replying. But Bomb again pointed from a free. Both sides traded points with Michael Frisby pointing for the Monastery. Sion’s half back line and midfield line were excellent all through the game especially in the closing stages of the game with Tramore trying everything within their power to find a result. Sion finished out the game with the Bomb Power knocking over his final point of the night. Final score Mount Sion 1-13 to Tramore 0-11. Well done lads, a good team performance. Next up is St. Saviours. This fixture has yet to be made.Junior Hurling Championship
Round seven of the Junior Hurling Championship took place in Páirc Pádraig O’Fainin last Friday night. It’s hard to believe this is the middle of June, with a real winter’s night setting the scene. Sion opted to play against the stiff breeze in the opening half. Passage capitalised on an early foul to take the lead from a pointed free. Dan Kelly’s shooting boots were polished and ready to be used, with Kelly pointing and also adding one from the placed ball. Passage got their second score but this ended all their scoring for the game with fifteen minutes only gone on the clock. Again Kelly struck two frees during a miserable down poor of rain. The ball bobbed and weaved its way through the air and over the crossbar. Passage were award a free on the twenty-one yard line and they opted for goal which was easily saved and cleared. Mark Flanagan pointed as Sion went in at the break three points up and a breeze now at their backs. Chick Hennessey raised a white flag just fifty seconds into the second half. Kelly pointed. Johnny Hayes rifled over two great scores with Kelly again dead accurate from the placed ball. Hard work in our experienced back line from Eoin Fanning, Paul Browne, John Cleere and Brian Flannery, aided by the younger players of Jason Power and Brian Hammond kept the Passage forwards at bay. Hennessey hit his second of the night with Mark Flanagan getting the only goal of the game with seventeen minutes gone in the half. Kelly and young Freeman combined, both tagged on scores late on with Hayes grabbing his second score of the night. Final score Mount Sion 1-15 to Passage 0-2. Well done lads, we still remain top of the table with Roanmore behind us on scoring difference and Passage and Ballygunner in third and fourth place respectively. Next up is Dunhill in Dunhill, will let you know the fixture, once it is made.Fundraiser
