Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Senior Hurling Championship
With no win to date in the championship, Sion travelled to Fraher Field with no option but a win to avoid or prolong relegation possibilities. Martin O’Neill pointed Sion in the right direction with a free within the first two minutes. A direct reply from Tallow’s Thomas Ryan and two more points put Tallow in the driving seat. Austin Gleeson pointed for Sion with Anthony Kirwan picking out Martin O’Neill for an excellent goal chance but was denied by a save by the Tallow keeper. Tallow sent over three further points to lead by four points. The first green flag of the game was raised as Sean Ryan hammered home Sion’s first goal. O’Neill again pointed from the placed ball before Ian O’Regan pulled off a top corner save worthy of the entrance fee alone! Tallow pointed from the resulting sixty-five. An Austin Gleeson ball into the Tallow square, was aided over the line by the hard working Martin O’Neill. Another fine save by O’Regan, this time putting his body on the line and to keep the Tallow forwards at bay. However, two late first half points helped Tallow to go in at the break one point up. Tallow were first out the traps in the second half with a point. The combination of good play from Gleeson, to Roche to McGrath ended in a point for the monastery from the stick of Sean Ryan. Tallow responded with a point with Martin O’Neill trading scores. O’Neill was deadly accurate from the placed ball and shot Sion into a one point lead. Anthony Kirwan knocked over a point with Michael Gaffney marking his return to Senior Hurling with an excellent solo-run and finish over the bar. Tallow were given a lifeline with time creeping into the final minutes of normal time. A Thomas Ryan effort from the twenty-one whizzed wide of the post. In the final minute of normal time a late Tallow attack was spearheaded with Kenny Stafford emerging from the Sion defence, sliothar in hand and spurring Sion on. Sean Ryan again pointed with O’Neill adding another. A final extraordinary Ryan point sealed a Sion six point win. Final score Mount Sion 2-15 to Tallow 0-15. Our final round game is against Roanmore. A win here could see us make the quarter-finals of the championship. No fixture has been made but this round is not expected to be played until Waterford exit the championship.Pappy Bowe
