Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Minor Championship
Minor Hurling Championship goes ahead on Monday 9th July against near neighbours De La Salle in Mount Sion in the first round of this year’s championship. This game was due to be played last Friday night but due to De La Salle’s involvement in the Feile it was moved to Monday. Throw in at 7:30pm. Hope to see you all up to cheer on the lads! Best of luck!!La na gClub
La na gClub took place last Sunday with the main event being the John Keane Tournament! Once again it was another keenly contested and skilful competition with very little separating the teams. The Shield final saw Connaught and Leinster face each other in a tightly contested game with Leinter coming out on top by a goal and a point. Munster and Ulster competed in the John Keane Cup Final with the men from the north been too strong. In other events of the day, the Under 11-16s took part in skills competitions and blitz games with their mentors all getting involved too. The Camogie girls were also on the scene and they took part in races, tug-of-war and an obstacle course! Thanks to all who helped out during the day! Plenty of pictures are available online via our website of the days goings on! See can you spot yourself!Under 15 Eastern
The Under 15s got their championship off to a winning start after a hard fought win over Ballyduff Lower last Thursday night. Sion opened the scoring through Evan McGrath. We conceded an early penalty but full back Jordan Hutchinson was on hand to stop the ball on the line. Ballyduff did get their account opened with a point from a free. The speedy Jake Mooney shot over from close range. A free from Mikey Daykin found young McGrath, and made no mistake in extending Sion’s lead. A brilliant save from the Ballyduff keeper denied McGrath but he pointed instead. Dylan Sheridan broke the ball with Mooney first to react and finished the ball to the net. McGrath and Mooney were causing real trouble up front for the Ballyduff side. Mooney was on hand to grab his second goal. Dylan “Lar” Sheridan made a wonderful catch and crashing the ball off the crossbar to deny him a goal. Ballyduff finished out the scoring of the half with two points. Sion lead by 2-6 to 0-5 at half time. The village men were first to score with a point within the first minute of the restart. Sheridan’s brilliant double in the air guided the ball into the back of Ballyduff’s net. Two quick goals and a point by the visitors early in the half gave the game a bit of excitement and narrowed the margin back to two points! Johnny Flynn extended the lead with a great point from the middle of the park. Lower and Ben Flanagan exchanged points with Ballyduff wasting a great chance of goal with the game heading into the final minutes. Mooney became a hat trick hero as he grabbed his side’s fourth goal of the game. Ballyduff pulled one back but a goal separated the sides as the final whistle blew. Final score Mount Sion 4-8 to Ballyduff Lower 3-8. Well done to both teams on a great game!Ladies Football
Our Ladies made the long travel to Modeligo to face Na Deise in the league last Wednesday night. In the opening half the girls started very slowly and missed several clear cut chances which could have come back to haunt us later on in the game. Both teams were level at half time. In the second half there was a big improvement with Jean Dooley working the ball up the field from corner back to score a very good goal. Final score Mount Sion 3-11 to Na Deise 1-9. Well done girls but still a lot to improve on in training.Under 13 Championship
We had two games this week in the championship. First up was Sacred Heart last Monday night in the club, and we had a very convincing win over them. On Saturday we travelled to Clonea Power (For John Cullen who ended up at Clonea Beach). Our lads didn’t perform to their full potential but never looked like they were going to lose the game. Final score Mount Sion 3-14 to Clonea 3-3 Well done lads but we need to keep up the hard work in training with bigger games ahead.Munster Final
