The last round of the Intermediate Hurling Championship against St. Saviours took place in Dunhill after a late switch of venues due to Walsh Park’s unavailability. A win here would guarantee us a place in the quarter-finals. Saviours took the lead with a free and a point within two minutes. But the start of a master class of free taking by Bomb Power, opened Sion’s account. Saviours replied with another two points. Dermot O’Byrne’s pressure on the opposition’s keeper and a great flick of the hurley pushed the ball over the line and Sion were back in the game. This was followed quickly by a point from the Bomb. Saviours pulled one back but Sion’s second goal came with Richie Roche, rocketing the ball to the net. Power finished off the first half scoring with a trio of pointed frees. Sion led by two goals at the break. It took eight minutes for the first score to come in the second half. Again from the stick of the deadly accurate Power. Saviours cancelled this out but another two frees and midfielder Niall O’Sullivan and Brian Cusack both finding their range. St. Saviours did manage a goal of their own when a sideline was floated in around the danger area with ex-Sion player Nicky Jacob pulling on the ground first time and beating young Forristal on the goal. Forristal made up for it when he hit two long range frees in succession over the black-spot of the Saviours goal. The master-class continued with Bomb making a name for himself as a free-taker. The introduction of minor, Cathal Dower, got his name on the score sheet with a fine point with time creeping into additional time. A final point from who else, but Bomb Power (Now looking to be called Bomb Canning) finished off the scoring and booked Sion’s place in the quarter finals. Well done lads, great team performance! Final score Mount Sion 2-16 to St. Saviours 1-8.Minor Championship
The second round of the Minor Hurling Championship took place last Wednesday night when we travelled to Lismore to take on last year’s champions St. Carthages. The home side started with an early goal but Sion settled in with Austin Gleeson pointing from a free followed closely by Evan Curran who also pointed. A great pass from Cathal Dower found Darren Finn and he drove over for Sion’s third point. Lismore enjoyed a period of dominance with Sion’s defence under great pressure, but credit to them, they denied the home side a number of good opportunities on goal. Lismore led at half time by 0-5 to 1-9. Aided by the breeze in the second half Sion set about their business and forced a sixty-five which was converted by Gleeson in the eight minute. Gleeson traded points with the opposite team’s free taker. Seventeen minutes in the half Sion raised a green flag with Gleeson breaking through the St. Carthages defence and placing the ball out of reach of Waterford Minor Captain Seanie Barry to edge the sides closer. Darren Finn pointed with Gleeson finishing Sion’s scoring with two minutes left. St. Carthages proved to be a good side as they ended the game with a strong finish. But credit to the Sion lads who battled right to the final whistle and their effort couldn’t be faulted. There is plenty of potential left in this team and I’m sure they will make their mark on this championship before it ends. Next week we are on the road again, travelling this time to Ballygunner. Throw in on Wednesday 25th July at 7:30pm. Best of luck lads.Under 16
To finish off a busy week of hurling in the club, the Philip Egan sponsored Under 16s took to the field in their first championship game with Passage the opposition last Saturday morning. Passage got the scoreboard ticking with two early frees. Sion had a great opportunity of a goal but whizzed wide of the post from young Kaylem Kennedy. Evan Curran and Ferdia Mac Aodhagáin got Sion on level terms but a great catch and strike from a Passage forward put them one ahead. Ben Flanagan got his first score but again this was cancelled out by a Passage point. Eric Hoban’s work rate created the next score with Ben Flanagan’s name been credited with the point. An excellent individual piece of skill from Passage’s centre-forward through the Sion defence and clinical finish to the net gave them a three point lead. Points from Evan and Ferdia were cancelled out and the deficit was still three at half time. This deficit was soon eroded after the break with Michael Flynn scoring a goal and point in quick succession. Passage replied but Curran hit two points, one from a free the other from a sixty-five. Passage became reliant on their free-taker and only scored three frees in the second half. Darren Gray got Sion’s second goal with a chain of great passes and Darren supplying the finish. Eric Hoban and Flynn both got a point each with Passage getting their last score and Curran doing the same for Sion. Well done lads, good solid win. Final score Cnoc Síon 2-12 to Passage 1-9.Under 15
In our second game of the Championship we took on Clonea in Mount Sion last Thursday evening. Clonea opened the scoring on two minutes but Ben Flanagan replied with a driving run through the Clonea defence. A quickly taken sixty-five by Mikey Daykin to Flanagan resulted in another score for Sion. Jake Mooney continued where he left off last week with another goal. Clonea responded with a goal of their own as the ball swooped in over the Sion defence and over the keeper to hit the net. Another Clonea score came from a quick Sion puck out which landed in the path of an oncoming player in a Green Jersey. Eoghan Browne pulled off a great save to deny the visitors. But they pointed instead. Mikey Daykin again landed another free to level the game up for half time. Clonea hit the first score of the second half with Jake Mooney finding his way through the visitors defence and finishing to the net. Clonea responded directly with a goal and two points. Kaylem Kennedy found the unmarked Ben Flanagan who made a mistake and struck over for a point. Sion keeper Browne made a great double save with Andrew Doherty driving forward from wing-back to score a well taken point. Two Clonea points were the response, with Mooney getting in for his third goal! That’s six goals in two games! Clonea proved to have the extra edge and physicality and ran out for three more points to finish out the game. Final score Mount Sion 3-5 to Clonea 2-11. Hard luck lads.Under 14
The first game of the week was the Under 14 Championship round two meeting of Cnoc Síon and Portlaw in the club. Portlaw set about their business early and hit two goals within ten minutes of the start. Alan Kirwan turned his man and pointed to credit Sion’s account with their opening score. Evan McGrath and Jake Mooney both raised white flags with Alan Kirwan’s effort been denied by the Portlaw keeper. Sion trailed by three points at half time. Portlaw ran in another goal just after the restart. Ben Sinnott found Mooney and he struck over for a point. Evan McGrath’s ground strike rattled the back of the net to reduce the deficit to two points. The trio of Timichi, Mooney and Jonathan Flynn all pointed with Timichi also smashing the ball past the Portlaw keeper. Portlaw acted swiftly and recovered the deficit of four points and went one ahead leading into injury time. A well taken Ben Flanagan free ended the game with both teams level. Well done lads, great fight back to draw the game. Final score Cnoc Síon 2-8 to Portlaw 4-2.Ladies Football League
The final game of the week took place on a miserable Sunday night in Mount Sion. The game was all one way traffic with Sion running out very comfortable winners with Kilmacthomas failing to make any impact on the scoreboard, with most of our girls getting on the score sheet. Well done girls, starting to work well together as a team and moving the ball around. Tougher games to come, so keep the effort up in training. Final score Cnoc Síon 11-27 to Kilmacthomas 0-0.Deise Draw
