Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Junior Hurling Championship
Round four of the Junior Hurling Championship took place last Thursday evening in the club against Eastern Champions Ballygunner. It was the visitors who opened the scoring with two points. Johnny Hayes pointed with Ballygunner cancelling it out. Jamie O’Meara pointed a free but three unanswered points from the Gunners saw them lead by six points. A goal from Captain Pappy Bowe, reduced that deficit for the half time break.
Sion now had the breeze to aid them in the second half. Ned Power hit the opening score but Ballygunner replied almost instantly. Sion struck two more points from O’Meara and Power and a goal from Ned saw Sion lead by two points. The game was back level with two Ballygunner scores but a point and a goal from substitute Daniel Kelly ensured Sion’s lead. A long free out of the Sion defence ended up in the back of Gunner net. Sion finished out the game with points from O’Meara and Kelly but a late rally by the Gunners saw them win two 21 yard frees. One was pointed and the other was saved on the line by Junior Hurling veteran Eoin Fanning. Final score Cnoc Síon 3-8 to Ballygunner 1-10. A fine win sees us move ahead of Ballygunner on the table and into a place for qualification for the knockout stages. But there are still a lot of games to be played. Next up for the Monastery is a visit to Clonea next Friday night. Throw in at 7:30pm.
Under 14 Championship
Our Under 14s recorded another fine win over western side St. Carthages. Sion ran up 1-8 in the opening half, with the goal coming from Sion’s scorer in Chief Evan McGrath. Sion hit two more goals in the second half with the first coming from Aaron Healy and he second from Charlie Costello. Well done lads. Great win. Final score Cnoc Síon 3-12 to St. Carthages 1-2. Next up is Dungarvan on Monday 27th May at 7:30pm in Dungarvan. On Thursday 30th May we travel to Ballygunner in the Eastern Championship with a 7pm throw in. Please travel and support the lads.
