Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Junior Football Championship
The Junior Footballers still remain top after another good win over Naomh Pól last Friday night. Rain through-out the game didn’t dampen the mood. Sion set about their business early on with Kenny Stafford pointing from a free. Naomh Pól replied in the eight minute, also from a free. Ruairi Sheridan pointed after collecting a ball from Ian Power in the corner. Sheridan again was on target when a goal may have been on offer, but two minutes later he didn’t make any mistake and rattled the net with an excellent finish. Naomh Pól kicked themselves back into the game with three points. But Ian Power ran onto a ball overhead to raise a green flag. Sion led at the break by 2-3 to 0-4.
The home side reduced the half time deficit to 4 points with a point just after the break. Evan Curran pointed as Daniel Kelly supplied a finish to the net from a tight angle. Naomh Pól raised their own green flag when a high ball in around the Sion goal was deflected into the back of the net. Substitute Anthony Kirwan raced clear but was denied by the keeper. Naomh Pól pointed with Sheridan replying and Kirwan added a point to finish out the game. Final score Cnoc Síon 3-6 to Naomh Pól 1-6. Well done lads, not out in action until two weeks time against Ferrybank away.

Brother Dowling Memorial Cup 2013
Our school under 12 hurlers brought a successful school hurling season to a great conclusion when they captured the prestigious Brother Dowling Cup in Mount Sion grounds on Thursday last. This competition goes from strength to strength and it is a fitting competition to honour the late, great Brother Dowling, former principal of the primary school.
The competition comprises of CBS schools in the South East and this year Mount Sion were joined by Kilkenny CBS, Carrick CBS and Callan CBS, all traditional hurling nurseries! The draw saw Mount Sion meet Callan CBS in the semi final. In a excellent match, Mount Sion finished the stronger side and emerged victorious . In the final they would meet Carrick CBS, the conquerors of reigning champions. Kilkenny CBS.
The final saw Mount Sion produce a fine performance to overcome the highly fancied Carrick! They were led from start to finish by the outstanding eleven year old prospect Timi Sobowale. However it was goalkeeper Caelin Wall and his well marshaled defence of Robert Jacob, Jake Maloney, Peter Nolan, Daniel Murphy, PJ Fanning and Kris Muresan that laid the real base for victory.
The joint captain PJ Murphy’s surging runs caused all sorts of problems for Carrick. However it was young forward Jack Byrne who proved the real hero with two early goals to which Carrick had no answer. Further scores from Richard Kiely, Scott Hoban and Samuel Mathe sealed victory. Great performances throughout from Conor Freeman, Conor Tierney, Ben le Blanc, Ben Ryan and Bode Ajayi.
Well done to all involved, a great end to a great year!
