Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Senior Hurling
The Semi-Finals of the championship took place last Sunday afternoon in Walsh Park. Sion got off to a poor start conceding a goal just three minutes in and found themselves on the end of a 1-3 to 0-1 scoreline after ten minutes of the game. Sion finally settled into the game twenty five minutes in with Richard Roche getting on the end of a high ball to finish to the net. Stephen Roche and Austin Gleeson both pointed for Sion and Michael Gaffney goaling for the Monastery just two minutes from the half time break. Two further points from Martin F. O’Neill and Gleeson saw Sion head in a goal up at half time.
From the restart Mount Sion found another white flag through Gleeson, with Passage responding from another free. Ian O’Regan’s long range effort sailed over the bar just thirteen minutes into the second half. Young Roche also flicked over from close range. Another blow for Sion came just a minute later with Passage firing the ball into the square and the ball was deemed over the line. Eoin McGrath and Robert Bresnan both shooting over for Sion but the rest of the half was all Passage with them getting another goal just six minutes from time to bring the game level. Two injury time frees fired Passage on and into this year’s County Final. Hard luck lads, the effort put in throughout the year was excellent. We’ll be back once again!
Under 15 Semi-Final
Our Under 15s are through to the Eastern Final after a great comeback victory over Ballygunner in Butlerstown last Wednesday evening. It was the Gunners who had the better start and had 1-2 to 0-1 up on the board after eight minutes. But a direct response by Johnny Flynn from a sideline into the back of net, brought Sion into the game. But two quick goals by the young Ballygunner men didn’t dishearten the Sion boys. Ben Flanagan was on tune all night from frees as Conor Quinn pointed on the eighteenth minute. Two more Flanagan points saw Sion trail by just four points at the break.
The Gunners restarted the game with two points. Ben Sinnott shot over for Sion with Alan Kirwan supplying the perfect pass to Sinnott to raise another Sion green flag! Corner back, Jack Whelan threw his body on the line as the Gunners goal attempt was foiled and Sion pointing with Johnny Flynn supplying the finish. Flanagan pointed twice more, when Conor Quinn emerged from the half back line, and ended up shooting to goal on the eighteenth minute! Sion were ahead, as the game crept into injury time, but in true Ballygunner style they didn’t give in and luck was on our side as they’re shot crashed off the crossbar and cleared up the field. Flanagan pointed his eight point of the night to give Sion a four point victory and a place in the Eastern Final against De La Salle. This final will be played in the coming weeks and details will be text out on the text list and put up on the club website. Well done lads, great spirit and never say die attitude. Best of luck in the final.
