Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Co. Junior Football Champions
Last Sunday our Junior Footballers made the trip to Fraher Field for the County Football Final against a much fancied Colligan side. Mount Sion were slow to start with Colligan running up three points to no score after eight minutes. Sion had to wait for another nine minutes to elapse before scoring with Captain Robert Bresnan leading the way and pointing. Stephen Roche ran onto a ball which looked to be out of reach but a volley kick over the bar gave Sion their second point from a tight angle. Colligan resumed with another pointed free but Sion took control with Ian Power supplying an overhead pass to Richard Roche who made no mistake in front of the goal. Ian O’Regan won the ball from the middle of the pitch and sent Roche clear for his second of the day! Sion were ahead just as half time approached, but Colligan pointed and the sides went in with the Monastery men up by three points. Sion now with the wind in their favour pushed on just after the break with another of Sion’s bright footballing talents Jordan Broaders sneaking in to tap over the bar. Two Colligan points were the response but Robert Bresnan continued his good form from the dead ball. An Ian Power point followed just midway through the half. Bresnan and Stephen Roche pointing Sion further back into the lead. Colligan pointed another free as the game rocked into the final minutes. Substitute Anthony Kirwan showed he has some football skill and pointed. Colligan were soon reduced to 14 men with Captain Bresnan pointing and sending Sion into Munster Club championship scheduled for 24th November. Final score Cnoc Sion 2-9 to Colligan 0-9. Well done to all concerned! It was a great occasion for many of the players as most of the team have been at the other end of County Final defeats in recent years. Great credit to Manager John Walsh and his selectors and backroom team and all the panel. We will face the winners of the Cork v Kerry Champions. If Kerry win we will be heading west and if Cork win, the game will be played in Mount Sion! Well done again.Under 21
To kick start our great weekend on the pitch our Under 21s recorded a hard fought win over near rivals Roanmore. Sion hit the opening score with Austin Gleeson pointing. Roanmore hit a run of form and made the most of the wind advantage. Roanmore capitalised on the a mistake in the Sion defence to bang home a goal. Again the home side pointed a string of points with Sion answering back via Stephen Roche and Gleeson. Sion went in nine points down at the break.
Sion now with the wind in their favour started early on recouping the deficit with Gleeson pointing the way with a number of points. Darren Finn got on the end of a ball in around the Roanmore danger area to give Sion the lift they needed. Finn followed up with a point with Martin F. O’Neill and Jordan Broaders also chipping in with points. Sion’s backs were holding firm under the pressure of the oncoming Roanmore forwards with Stephen O’Neill providing the leadership. Roche and Gleeson continued to point with Sion taking control and leading as the game fell into the final few minutes of play. Score of the game would undoubtedly go to Austin Gleeson who over the shoulder from over 100 yards out saw the ball sail clearly between the Sky Blue posts. Final score Cnoc Síon 1-19 to Roanmore 1-15. Sion will now face Ballygunner in the Semi-Finals of the Championship. No date set yet.Club Website
