Mount Sion GAA Club Notes

Senior Hurling

Molleran’s Tournament

Our Senior hurlers faced Carrick Swans in the last 16 of the St. Molleran’s Tournament last Thursday night. We ran into an early lead with two points from the stick of Gavin Carroll and the evergreen Tony Browne slotting over from a free to give Sion a three point advantage. The Swans opened their scoring on the tenth minute and followed up with another a few moments later. Young Jordan Broaders worked hard in the corner and rounded his man and made no mistake in front of the goal. Just after that a rebound shot was finished to the net by big operator Damien Hurley who has made a welcome  return to hurling after a long absence. Sion led at the break by two goals.
The second half continued with Tony Browne pointing just as the game resumed. Richard Roche and Gavin Carroll both found white flags. Sion were on a roll and continued to point through Browne, Stafford and Evan Curran. The Swans were growing  in confidence after their 14th minute goal and hit four more points on the trot but but once again up popped that man in the black helmet  Tony Browne to  hit five points in a row to close out the game and ensure a quarter final place . Final score Cnoc Síon 2-16 to Carrick Swans 1-10. Well done lads also next week there’s Sargent Cup action against Lismore in Lismore.

Minor Football

The Minors played their final group match in the football championship against St Mary’s in Ballydurn on Saturday knowing a win was needed if they were to proceed to the knock-out stages. Opting to play with the wind in the first half they got off to a good start with a point from team captain Darren Gray before St Mary’s responded with a rasper of a goal that stand in keeper Eric Hoban could do nothing about. From then on though it was one way traffic to Sion as super forward Mikey Daykin tormented the St Mary’s defence scoring four goals in the space of five minutes with Conor Butler and Dylan Sheridan getting in on the act with goals of their own, the hard working Ferdia Mac Aodhagain pointed next and with Ben Flanagan netting on the stroke of half time the game was effectively over, Half time score Mount Sion 7-4 St Mary’s 1-0.

In the second half St Mary’s piled on the pressure but the defence ably marshalled by William Ormond and Cian O’Regan held firm and with Eric Hoban pulling off some dramatic saves the result was never in doubt, the final score Mount Sion 7-5 St Mary’s 1-3, well done lads on a great result and best of luck in the knock-out stages.

Waterford Season Ticket

2014 Waterford GAA Club Season Tickets are still available for purchase from Walsh Park and Fraher Field at the following days and times during the month of March.

Walsh Park – Wednesdays 12.30pm to 7.30pm.
Fraher Field – Saturdays 10.30am to 12.30pm.

It is also possible to renew membership of the scheme at these times if you were a holder in 2013. All 2013 season tickets have now been removed from the system and will not grant access to 2014 games. A card reading system is being rolled out across venues in the county.

Get Well Soon

Best wishes and a speedy recovery to Phil Fanning who underwent hip replacement surgery during the week.

Membership

Membership for this year is due by the end of this month so if you haven’t already done do please contact Club Registrar Paul Fanning as soon as possible, all rates are up on the membership page of the website.

Future Champions Award

Well done to Stephen Roche who was this week selected on the Future Champions team of 2014 for his impressive performances on the Fitzgibbon Cup winning team.

National Hurling League

Unfortunately the Waterford Senior Hurlers went down to Kilkenny in a heavy defeat on Sunday, one positive was the return of Austin Gleeson from injury as he made his competitive debut on the day.

Last Man Standing

Last Man Standing continued this week with Newcastle leaving it late to keep a few players in the competition ! Updated table can be seen on the website.

Fixtures

Under 10 Astro blitz in Carriganore on Friday 28 March at 6:30pm

Sargent Cup v Lismore in Lismore on Saturday 29th March at 3:00pm.
