Last Wednesday evening another trip to the Carrick-Beg venue beckoned with our opposition in the Quarter Finals being Wexford side Cloughbawn. It was the opposition who hit the first score of the game but Sion quickly replied opening their account with an Eoin McGrath point. A poorly struck Tony Browne free found its way in around the square and first to seize the opportunity was Martin F. O’Neill who rattled the net from close range. Both sides then traded points with Sion’s scores coming from the free taking abilities of Kenny Stafford and Browne. Cloughbawn goaled thirteen minutes in and again Stafford and Browne were on target to give Sion a one point margin lead at half time.
Browne restarted the game with a point just after 30 seconds. but it was the Wexford side who began to inflict their dominance on the game. Five points in a row saw Sion four points in arrears. Sion’s captain Michael Gaffney pointed but once again the Wexford side replied with a point of their own . As the game moved closer to the final few minutes it was back to one point but a darting solo-run by WIT’s Fitzgibbon winner Harry Kehoe and a finish over the bar saw Sion needing a goal to win the game. Two chances presented themselves with two long range frees dropped in and around the Cloughbawn danger area but to no avail, Kenny Stafford did point but time was up and Sion exit the Tournament. Thanks to St. Molleran’s for extending their invitation again this year and best of luck with the rest of the Tournament. Final score: Cnoc Síon 1-14 to Cloughbawn 1-16.
