Mount Sion GAA Club Notes
Senior Championship
Walsh Park was the venue on Saturday last for the highly anticipated semi final meeting between Sion and the much fancied De La Salle in this year’s Championship, Sion got off the mark from the stick of on form Eoin McGrath in the third minute, Salle equalised from Jake Dillon a minute later before the mercurial Stephen Roche put Sion back in front with his first point of the game, another deadly accurate free from Martin O Neill followed before Tony Browne notched two points on the trot to keep the scoreboard ticking over, in a tight half De La Salle traded points with their main threat coming from County star Jake Dillon although the Sion half back line were on top form also limiting the oppositions chances, in added time a huge puck from Austin Gleeson was batted out by the De La Salle keeper and the ball ended up in the back of the net but the umpire adjudged it was over the bar before it was cleared and a point was awarded to leave the half time score at 0-09 apiece. The second half was barely under way when a great move saw Stephen Roche free in front of the De La Salle goal where he made no mistake and buried it for the first goal of the game, De La Salle kept up the pressure with two more points before Sean Ryan received the ball again in front of goal which he coolly blasted past the keeper to give Sion another goal, top drawer saves from Iggy O Regan and heroic defending all across the back line helped keep Sion’s noses in front following a period of intense pressure from De La Salle before Sion started to grow in confidence knowing the game was theirs for the taking, some great points from Martin O Neill and Eoin Mac helped seal the result with the icing on the cake coming from Sean Ryan with two points in the final minutes, final score Cnoc Sion 2-17 De La Salle 0-16, well done lads there were some great performances all round on the pitch today that helped Sion through to their first County final since 2006 against old rivals Ballygunner on October 5th. Mount Sion were quick into the game with Edward Cullen and Luke O’Brien both raising white flags. Louie Halligan, Johnny Flynn and Evan McGrath were all lively in the forwards and picked off their scores well. Sion led at the break by 3-8 to 1-6.After the restart, Abbeyside started to show their dominance and drew level and took the lead heading into the final minutes of the game. Ben Flanagan who was excellent through-out came up to take a 21 metre free and rattled the net to give Sion the edge. Sion held strong with James Ogundare and Charlie Costello covering all areas of the pitch to help Sion to a 6-16 to 6-15 victory! Well done lads!
