Mount Sion GAA Club Notes
Sargent Cup
Friday night saw the first round of this years Sargent Cup take place against Fourmilewater in a misty Carriganore under lights, Sion got off to the perfect start when Bill Walsh rattled home to the back of the net after a good move down the left hand side, following this both sides were evenly matched with the bulk of Sion’s points coming from frees by Martin “Fish” O Neill with Gavin Carroll and Stephen and Richard Roche also raising the white flag to leave the score at half-time 1-08 to 0-10 in favour of the monastery men. In the second half as conditions worsened Sion pushed on to take a seven point lead but the men from the Nire Valley never gave up and rallied to end up winning the game on a two point margin, tough luck lads next game is against Lismore at the end of April.
Intermediate Football
In our first match of the season the Intermediate Footballers took on last year’s beaten finalists Portlaw in Dunhill on Saturday last, playing with the strong breeze in the first half Portlaw took full advantage and racked up the points playing free flowing hand passing football with Sion’s scores coming from a Kevin Kelly goal and Richard Roche point, after the break even with the wind at their backs Sion couldn’t recover with Portlaw running out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 4-15 to 1-03, there’s a quick chance to put this result behind them as the lads play Kilmacthomas in St Mollerans on Friday night at 6.30pm in the next round.
Under 14s
The Under 14s travelled to Lismore on Saturday last in their first outing of the year to take part in the annual Paddy Whelan tournament, the very young squad played three games narrowly losing out in the Shield final to Cois Bhride , well done to the lads and keep up the good work for your coaches.
