Mount Sion GAA Club Notes
Junior Hurling
Friday night last saw a battle of wits on the sideline as the Juniors managed by hurling purist Pappy Bowe went head to head against Ballydurn in Kill who were being looked after by the experienced Anthony Kirwan, Sion got off to a bright start with Michael King playing in a more advanced role putting two points on the board in quick succession, captain Aaron Dempsey converted a free next with young Stephen Power on the goal making a number of good saves to keep the opposition at bay and limiting their scores to points, just before the break Dempsey sent in a great ball to Dan Kelly who made no mistake from short range and buried the ball in the back of the net to put Sion in the lead at the break by the minimum 1-04 to 0-06. Lee Halligan opened the scoring in the second half before a mistake in defence left Ballydurn back in the game with their first goal, more points from Kinger and Pooch kept Sion in the hunt but the Newtown men were to finish the game stronger scoring another goal and tacking on four points without reply to finish up on a scoreline of 2-13 to 1-09, tough luck lads, quote of the night goes to Pappy who showed his disdain for modern fads in hurling with the gem ” Cu Chullain never played with a plastic hurley “!Intermediate Hurling
In a must win game on Saturday the Intermediates took on Clonea in Dunhill knowing that defeat would put them in a relegation play off for the second year in a row, Clonea started strong putting three points on the board before Anthony Kirwan back in the blue and white of Sion got our first point, Peter Penkert followed up with a rare goal but Clonea kept ticking away on the points before young Ben Flanagan burst through to raise the second green flag of the night for Sion, with Cian O Regan once again deadly accurate on frees there were only two points in it at the break 2-05 to 1-10 to Clonea. Things were level just after the restart with points from Kirwan and Flanagan but Clonea broke Sion’s hearts with another goal to take the lead, Sion got back to within a point but the County men’s confidence was up and they took all the pressure from Sion’s attacks and closed out the game winning by three points 2-17 to 2-13, tough luck lads playoff game will be announced in the coming weeks.Minor Hurling
Following on from the narrow loss to Clan na Gael the Minors made the journey to Dungarvan on Sunday to face Abbeyside, unfortunately it was a bad day at the office for this young side who came up against formidable opponents in an Abbeyside team who must surely be favourites to win this division, hopefully the lads can put this defeat behind them and concentrate on the next game against St Patricks in the coming weeks .Kellogg’s Cul Camp
The Kellogg’s Cul camp takes place this week and you can register your child on Monday morning, the forecast isn’t too bad for what promises to be a great week.
