Mount Sion GAA Club Notes
Senior Championship
Saturday night saw the final round of the group stages where nothing but a win was needed if Sion were to progress to the knockout stages next weekend, Lismore provided the opposition in Fraher Field and with a strong team of current and former Waterford players were in a similar position to Sion in the group, from the start Sion settled well with Eoin McGrath leading the way from midfield using the ball well and taking his scores to put the Monastery men four points ahead before Lismore got off the mark, an unfortunate misunderstanding in the Sion defence left Lismore back into it when they got the first goal of the game against the run of play, this handed the impetus to the Westerners but Sion were taking their points well with Austin Gleeson, John Dee, Tony Browne, Sean Ryan and Martin F O Neill all getting on the score sheet to go into the break two points ahead. The second half started the same as the first with the Sion half back line dominating and feeding the forwards with good ball which saw four more points on the board and looking good to drive on to victory, Lismore had other ideas though and with their dangerous forwards getting two goals they kept coming back into the game until near the end when frees from Martin F O Neill and Gleeson finally put daylight between the teams to leave the final score at Mount Sion 0-21 Lismore 3-10, this result now sets up a mouthwatering rematch of last year’s county final against Ballygunner in Walsh Park on Saturday next in the Quarter Final. Team Ian O Regan, Kevin Flynn, Christopher Ryan, Stephen O Neill, Pat Kelly, Austin Gleeson (0-04), John Dee(0-01), Martin O Neill(0-01),Eoin McGrath(0-03),Tony Browne(0-02), Sean Ryan(0-02), Owen Whelan(0-01), Martin F O Neill(0–07), Ian Galgey, Bill Walsh.Subs Robert Bresnan for Galgey, Stephen Roche for Whelan, Mikey Daykin for Sean Ryan.Minor Championship
The Minors finished their campaign on Tuesday night last on a disappointing note as they went down to Brickeys in the club, despite opening the scoring Sion were on the backfoot in the first half as the visitors used the advantage of the breeze to go into the break 2-10 to 0-05 ahead. Sion staged a comeback in the second half and were well on their way to getting level when Brickeys got another goal to cement their lead, after that despite Sion’s best efforts they couldn’t overcome the deficit and the game ended on a scoreline of Brickeys 3-15 Cnoc Sion 2-13Roanmore Tournament
The annual Roanmore tournament took place on Saturday last and we had two U9 teams entered one in the morning and one in the afternoon .Our first team in the morning played 3 games against St Marys from Clonmel Tipperary, Douglas from Cork and Our lady’s Island from Wexford winning all 3 games with notable performances from Adam Regan and Alex Walsh .
