Mount Sion GAA Club Notes
County Champions!
It was County final day for the Under 16’s in Walsh Park on Saturday last as they took on local rivals De La Salle hoping to win their first title at this age group since 1998, Sion started brighter in a tight first half with the ever reliable Evan McGrath once more on free taking duties getting the first two scores before captain Johnny Flynn put a peach of a cut over the bar, De La Salle to their credit fought their way back into the game with their dangerous attackers scoring four points in the space of four minutes before Flynn found himself free in the box and made no mistake burying the ball in the back of the net to put Sion two points ahead, half time score Cnoc Sion 1-06 De La Salle 0-07. De La Salle got off to the better start in the second half getting three points without reply before Sion started to get back into the game, James Ogundare’s shot was brilliantly saved by the opposition keeper but this was always going to be Sion’s day as the defence shut up shop and with McGrath tipping over points from frees they closed in on the win, with a last minute scare dealt with by the defence the referee blew the whistle to start the celebrations as this team were deservedly crowned County Champions, the club would like to wish a get well soon to Tommy McGrath and express our gratitude to referee Alan Kissanne for his quick reactions when Tommy needed attention and also to the De La Salle club doctor for her help during the situation.Under 21’s
Saturday was a busy day in Walsh Park as the Under 21’s started their campaign against Passage, Sion were in control from early on with Evan Curran catching the eye as he tormented the Passage defence helping the Monastery men go into the break on a scoreline of 1-07 to 0-04, Cian O Regan continued his great form from the Intermediate championship with a brilliant solo goal which helped seal the result on a comfortable scoreline of 3-15 to 2-07 to put Sion into the semi’s in a couple of weeks time, well done to Nicholas Mackey and his selectors on having such well prepared panel on the day.New Arrivals!
