Mount Sion GAA Club Notes
Danny Bowe
It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Danny Bowe on Sunday last after a brief illness. Danny was a great GAA man and Mount Sion supporter all of his life serving as the First Aid Man to adult and juvenile Mount Sion teams down through the years. Danny was probably best known for his love of, and contribution to camogie in Waterford through the Ardkeen Camogie Club of which he was a founder member as a young man working for the Health Board in Ardkeen Hospital.Danny spent virtually all of his spare time down the years introducing youngsters to camogie with coaching sessions in the Mount Sion grounds where he was virtually an ever present at all hurling and camogie sessions. There were many players who came to the fore on Waterford camogie teams in recent years whose early careers were forged by Danny Bowe from a young age. On the night that he was holding on to life Danny would have taken great pleasure in seeing the game he loved being honoured with the awarding of the WLR/Granville Hotel award to Patricia Jackman.
There were many other spheres of activity in Danny’s life to which he contributed and which others will no doubt document but for us in Mount Sion he will be sadly missed as a colleague, a friend and supporter in all things.
Under 21 Eastern Final
A great crowd turned out on a cold and wet Thursday night in January to see the long awaited Under 21 Eastern Final against City rivals De La Salle under the lights in Carriganore last week, Sion got off to a lively start in the heavy conditions with Mikey Daykin getting our first score on the board after Darren Finn was brought down going through on goal, good work from Stephen Power at the other end a few minutes later helped keep the sides level on points before Sion got into their stride with points from Jordan Broaders including a peach down the right and a great point from Austin Gleeson following a clearance putting them four points ahead at one stage, De la Salle rallied though raising the white flag three times in quick succession to bring the scoreline down to the minimum at the break in Sion’s favour 0-07 to 0-06. Both sides traded scores once again in the second half with Gleeson and Sean Colfer on the mark for Sion before De La Salle started getting the upper hand in the scoring stakes going ahead for the first time in the game after fifteen minutes in the half, as conditions worsened the opposition got on top but Sion kept up the hard work and were rewarded when Andrew Doherty ran through and made no mistake to get the first goal of the game, but time wasn’t on their side and the ref blew for full time with the final score at full time Cnoc Sion 1-14 De La Salle 0-18, tough luck to everyone involved that all the hard work and commitment came down to a one point match.Bon Voyage
