Mount Sion GAA Club Notes
Sargent Cup
Cnoc Sion 3-20
Ballyduff Upper 2-23
The Seniors made the long trip to Ballyduff Upper on Saturday night last hoping to get their first win in this year’s Senior League/Sargent Cup, Sion got off to the perfect start when Sean Ryan latched onto a long ball from John Dee and made no mistake burying the ball to the back of the net from close range, the home side found their range as the half went on but scores from Ryan, Evan Curran, John Dee and Martin F O’Neill meant there were only three points between the sides at the break , half time score 0-12 to 1-06 in Ballyduff’s favour. A welcome point from Owen Whelan opened Sion’s scoring in the second half but two goals in two minutes from Ballyduff threatened to put the game out of reach, Sion kept plugging away though and their efforts were rewarded with another goal from the in form Ryan after he was denied previously by the keeper putting them right back in the game, substitute Ian Galgey made the most of his cameo appearance scoring 1-02 and in a frenetic final few minutes both sides thought they had it won before the ref blew his whistle with the sides drawn at 3-20 to 2-23, well done lads on the team spirit shown in the comeback, next game is the opening round of the Championship in two weeks.Michael Foley
It is with sadness that we report the passing on Sunday last of one of our club’s great players of former years, Michael(‘Muckel’) Foley of Lismore Park. Michael was an exceptionally gifted and versatile hurler whose talent was recognised from a young age. A player who could stand out in any position he won the first of this five senior championship medals with the club as a goalkeeper in 1963 having been pressed into that position following the retirement of Dickie Roche and went on to win three titles in a row in that role. In 1969 he reverted to his favourite midfield position, with Dickie Roche coming back into goal, from where he captained the club to its 21st championship win against Abbeyside. He returned to goal and won his fifth championship medal against Dunhill in 1972.He represented the county in all grades and between 1966 and 1972 he retained the goalkeeping position with Waterford giving some outstanding performances and was selected on the Munster Railway Cup winning side in 1968.To his wife Margaret, son John, daughters Susan and Jennifer, daughter in law and sons in law, grandchildren, sister Mary and brother Paddy, and extended family we offer our deepest sympathy.
