Mount Sion GAA Club Notes
Minor Hurling
Cnoc Sion 0-17
De La Salle 0-16
The Minors were in action again a week after their marathon effort against Naomh Carthage last week, this time the opposition were De La Salle and the venue was McGinn Park Ballygunner, on a perfect morning for hurling Sion started well dominating the early exchanges running into an early lead with the industrious midfielders backed up by a well drilled defence keeping the opposition at arms length and were well deserved of their three point lead going into the break half time score Cnoc Sion 0-09 De La Salle 0-06, De La Salle got their momentum going in the second half and brought the game level at a number of stages, in a nailbiting final few minutes the game could have gone either way but when Jamie Gleeson picked up a loose ball near the half way line and calmly slotted over the bar to the delight of the huge Mount Sion crowd there was no time left for Cleaboy men and Sion were through to their second Minor final in two years, final score Cnoc Sion 0-17 De La Salle 0-16, sheer determination and excellent performances all round the pitch along with top coaching have got this team to this level and we wish them the best of luck in the Minor Final against Ballygunner in early October.Under 16 Hurling
Cnoc Sion 2-11
Naomh Carthage 1-10
Another young team doing the club proud are the Under 16’s who took on Naomh Carthage in the Quarter Final in Lismore on Wednesday last coming away with a four point victory to book a place in the semi final against Ballygunner this Thursday, well done to all involved who have had a hectic schedule of games over a very short time period.Under 14 Hurling
Our Under 14’s bowed out of the Championship on Monday last giving a very credible effort in miserable conditions against Abbeyside in Clonea, this has been a brilliant year for this team with only a few starters up to the age and with many younger players stepping up to the mark, best wishes for next year when they can only improve.Paraic Fanning
Huge congratulations to Paraic Fanning who this week was ratified as the new Waterford senior hurling manager, Paraic has many years of coaching experience and was also the manager when Mount Sion won their last County championship in 2006, lately he was involved with Davy Fitzgerald at Wexford and has recently been helping out with the Minors in the club, best wishes from everyone in Mount Sion to Patsy as he sets out on the journey to make Waterford serious contenders again.Seamus Frisby
Sincere condolences to the family of the late Seamus Frisby who passed away in Dublin this week, as a younger man Seamus won Under 16 and Minor medals with the club in the sixties before he moved to Dublin as a trainee teacher, the Frisby family is steeped in Mount Sion history with Seamus’ brothers Bernard, Edward and the late Michael all representing the club with the family link continuing to the current day, our thoughts are with his family at this sad time, ar dheis De go raibh a anam.Martin O’Neill
Great news coming from New York this week as Martin O’Neill has been named as the Tipperary Hurling Club NY Hurler of The Year for 2018, Nailler has been playing over the pond for the last number of years and everyone in the club is delighted to see one of our own doing so well !Deise Draw
