Mount Sion GAA Club Notes
Senior Hurling Championship
Cnoc Sion 1-16
De La Salle 1-20
The eagerly anticipated Senior Hurling semi final between Mount Sion and De La Salle took place in Walsh Park on Sunday with a place in the County final against up for grabs, the game exploded into life with DLS raising the green flag in the first minute with their first attack of the game, Sion worked their way back into the game and were rewarded when Jack Meaney smashed the ball to the back of the net after being set up by Austin Gleeson, the game was level seven times during the half and that was how the teams went into the break at 1-11 apiece, Sion started well in the second half at one stage going three points ahead but DLS proved difficult to break down and went ahead by three points, despite strong pressure from Sion in the closing minutes they were unable to break them down and they ran out winners on a four point margin, final score Cnoc Sion 1-16 De La Salle 1-20, it was a disappointing end to a good year of hurling but the result was put into perspective by a bad injury to Peter Penkert in the first half, everyone in the club wishes Peter a speedy recovery and it was a terrible way for him to end his season, we would also like to put on record the invaluable assistance provided by Dr Mark Rowe on the day helping with Peter’s injury.Minor Hurling Championship
Cnoc Sion 2-24
Abbeyside 2-15
The Minors were in action on Thursday night as they travelled to hotly tipped Abbeyside in the quarter final knowing that theirjourney in this year’s championship would be over without a win on the night, as the game progressed Sion’s confidence grew with players all around the pitch stepping up to the mark and and they were well worth their three point lead before Abbeyside got a last gasp goal deep into injury time to bring the game to extra time, this was to be Sion’s night and they finished off the job in extra time winning by a seven point margin, final score Cnoc Sion 2-24 Abbeyside 2-15, this result now sets up a semi final showdown against Ballygunner next weekend.
Under 13 Hurling
Cnoc Sion 2-12
Lismore 3-06
A superb second half display from our Under 13’s saw them reach the county final as they came from behind to beat Naomh Carthage in Leamybrien on Saturday last, this young team really put on a displayas they limited the opposition to just one score in the second half, a well deserved final in the coming weeks now awaits this young team and they will no doubt be up to the challenge.Dick Roche Tournament
The annual Dick Roche Under 9 tournament took place in the club on Saturday last with Kilmacow, Abbeyside, and Faythe Harriers providing the opposition, after a number of entertaining games Kilmacow were the overall winners, members of Dick’s family were on hand to present the prizes and as usual another very well run event in memory of a great clubman went off very smoothly, thanks to everyone who helped out on the day.Condolences
Sincere sympathies to John “Johnno” O’Keeffe and family on the sad passing of his mother Sheila during the week, our thoughts are with Johnno and family at this difficult time, ar Dheis De go raibh a h-anam.
