Minor Championship
The Barry Murphy Auctioneers sponsored Mount Sion minors got the best possible start to the championship with an 11 point win over Lismore last Wednesday night. Sion shot into the lead with points from Stephen and Martin O’Neill (2 each) and Brian Power (1). Lismore responded with 4 unanswered points. Evan Sheridan traded points with Lismore, before Martin O’Neill finished to the corner of the net to give Sion a 7 point lead at half time. The second half Mount Sion’s defence got on top only conceding one point in total. Darren Finn got on the score sheet with Sion’s second goal. Further points from Austin Gleeson and Stephen Roche closed the scoring and left the score 2-16 to 0-9. Shane Forrestal had a fine game in goal with a solid full backline of Mark Flanagan, Craig Sauvage and Patrick McGrath. Darren Flanagan and Aaron Coady played well on the wings with Stephen O’Neill excelling at centre-back. Aaron Dempsey and Stephen Roche worked hard in the middle of the park. Evan Sheridan held his own against county minor Ray Barry, with Lee Thornton and Darren Finn winning ball in the half forward line. The full forward line came good with a total of 2-7 coming from Martin F O’Neill, Austin Gleeson and Brian Power. The next minor game is scheduled for Wednesday 2 weeks against Butlerstown in Butlerstown.
Intermediate Hurling
The Intermediate Hurlers qualified for the quarter finals with a well deserved win over Ferrybank in Walsh Park. The men from across the bridge opened the scoring with a free. Mount Sion responded in kind with a free from Dan Kelly. Both teams went point for point with frees from Dan Kelly and Jamie O’Meara and a super point from Dermot O’Byrne keeping Sion in the lead. Sion began to dominate and their first goal came from Dermot O’Byrne midway through the half. O’Byrne struck for his second goal when a 21 meter free was saved and O’Byrne was first to react (a repeat of Tony Browne’s goal in the Munster Final). Mount Sion led at the break by 7 points. The second half saw Mount Sion defence dominate giving Ferrybank very little. Sion’s third and final goal came 10 minutes from the end with a long ball in around the square with veteran star Brian Greene getting the all important flick to seal victory and gain a place in the knock out stages of the competition. Final score 3-12 to 0-13. The intermediates are due to face Dunhill on Tuesday 27th July.
Junior Football
The Junior Footballers went top of the league with their best display of the year to date with another super win against St. Pauls. Due to the Munster Final Replay the match went ahead with an earlier throw in. For Mount Sion Ian “The Bomb” Power scored 2-4 with Pappy “You never know” Bowe proving to be a good corner back. Final score Cnoc Sion 6-6 to St. Pauls 0-4.
Under 15
Our under 15 hurlers were narrowly defeated by a strong Ballygunner team on Saturday last which was played by both clubs in good spirits despite the terrible conditions. Best for Sion were Stephen Power, Mikey Daykin, Reese Hodgers, William Ormond, Austin Gleeson, Cathal Dower, Cian O’Regan and Sean Walsh. Our game scheduled for Saturday against De La Salle has been postponed due to the Waterford senior hurlers replay with Cork.
Under 13s
The under 13s took on Ballygunner last Thursday night in dreadful conditions in the City League. Mount Sion never really got going with Ballygunner coming out easy winners. Best for Sion were Ben Flanagan, Ryan Flanagan and Mikey Daykin.
