Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Eoin McGrath
Best wishes to Eoin McGrath who announced late last week that he is retiring from Inter-County Hurling with Waterford. Eoin has given over a decade of service to the blue and white of the Deise and for his great efforts has four Munsters, a National League along with numerous Waterford Crystal medals to his name. We’re all proud of you Eoin and look forward to having you back on a full time basis with the club!Junior Football Championship
The Junior Footballers were in action in the last round of the championship last Saturday afternoon when they faced Erins Own in Poleberry. The reward for the winner is to top the table. The home side opened the scoring with a point. On the eight minute Michael Frisby pointed from a free and again in the eighteenth minute to take the lead. Sion missed a number of good scoring opportunities both from play and frees. Stephen Roche kicked over with Kevin Kelly also following suit with a point of his own. Sion led by three points at the break. Two minutes in and Erins Own drew level with a well taken goal and took the lead a minute later with a point. But Sion settled back into the task at hand when a quick free from Sean Ryan to Kevin Kelly ended in another Sion score. The excellent John O’Leary received a great pass from Stephen Roche to point Sion further ahead. Again Roche was involved in the next run of play. Playing a one-two to Bomb Power with the Bomb taking his goal very well. Kelly again pointed with Erins Own pulling back a score from a free. John O’Leary had now taken over on the free taking and made no mistake raising another white flag. The other Kelly, Dan was also in scoring form and scored score of the afternoon. Mark Kennedy from Erins Own was again accurate from the placed ball and got his side another point. A brilliant pass from Robert Breslin found Ned Power who also raised a green flag for the Monastery! Dan Kelly took his second score with Kevin Kelly finishing out the scoring with a personal tally of four points. Well done lads, good result. Final score Cnoc Síon 2-11 to Erins Own 1-5. No fixture made for the Semi-Final just yet but will have it up on the website when it is.Under 14 Championship
Our Under 14s took the short spin to Ballygunner to face them in the third round of their championship. It was possibly the worst night of the week with rain and light fading very quickly. Ballygunner hit the first score with a point but Michael Flynn for on back for Sion. Two Ballygunner goals didn’t dampen the Sion spirit in these younger hurlers as Evan McGrath’s free dipped in over the keeper and to the back of the net! Jake Mooney enjoyed his great run of form and got Sion back to within a point with a goal. Michael Flynn got his first goal with a low powerful shot beating the Ballygunner net minder. The Gunners traded points with Jake Mooney before the home side got their third goal of the game. This gave Ballygunner a one point lead with little or no time left on the clock. Sion pushed for a last gasp drive forward to level the game and rescue a point. Conor Quinn did just that with a point and kept Sion’s unbeaten record going in Championship, with three draws!! Well done lads. Final score Cnoc Síon 3-3 to Ballygunner 3-3.Wedding Bells
