Mount Sion GAA Club Notes
Seamus Power
It is with great sadness that we report the passing of a true Mount Sion and Waterford great Seamus Power on Saturday last, born in 1929 Seamus made his Waterford debut in 1949 when he came on for Davy Power against Limerick, at the time he was playing for Roscrea where he worked for the Post Office, on his transfer back to Waterford he returned to Mount Sion where he became one of its greatest players captaining two championship winning teams; hurling in 1958 and football in 1959, his late goal in the 1959 All Ireland Final ensured a draw and Waterford made no mistake in the replay earning their second Liam McCarthy cup, he won three county Minor medals with Mount Sion in 1945-47 and as a Senior won a further sixteen county Senior Championship medals – twelve for hurling and four for football all of which were won in a period of just thirteen years, following his retirement from playing Seamus was trainer, coach and selector to the County Senior hurling team for a number of years and held similar positions with the club, he was also one of the top referees in hurling and was in charge of the National League final in New York in the 1960s, he also served the club with distinction in every role from secretary to chairman taking over from Pat Fanning in 1970, our sympathies go out to his family son Tom daughter Joanne and extended family , ar dheis De go raibh a anam.Junior Football
