Mount Sion Gaa Notes
Senior Tournament
The Seniors have advanced to the Final of the St. Molleran’s Tournament where they overcame Carrick-Davins last Thursday night. Final score Mount Sion 2-20 to Carrick-Davins 1-7. No date is fixed for the final as yet.
Senior League
The second Senior League game of year took place last Sunday night against Dungarvan where ex-Mount Sion senior hurler Brian Flannery was at the helm of the “Old Boro”. Sion dominated the opening exchanges mainly through the stick of Sean Ryan. Ian Galgey was found unmarked to finish to the back of the Dungarvan’s net to race into an early lead. Further points from Ken & Eoin McGrath and Martin O’Neill gave Sion a 5 point cushion at half time.
Dungarvan had a better second half with 2 goals quick goals, one coming from county star Jamie Nagle, which by passed Ian O’Regan in the Sion goal to put Dungarvan in the lead for the first time in the game. Eoin Whelan pulled points back for Sion and a Martin F. O’Neill goal drew the teams level. However this wasn’t to be as easy a task as both sides went point for point. John Dee levelled proceedings once again from a successfully converted 65 and points from Ken McGrath and Brian Cusack kept Sion in the lead. There was no time for a last hurrah for the westerners and the game finished Mount Sion 2-17 Dungarvan 3-12. Championship is next Saturday night at 5:30pm in Walsh Park against Senior newcomers Roanmore.
Under 16
Our Philip Egan sponsored Under 16s took on Lismore in the opening game of the championship in the usual windy Mount Sion. Lismore opted to play with the wind in the opening half playing into the Marian Park goal. Austin Gleeson opened the scoring with the successful converting of a 65. Lismore scored 3 unanswered points but yet again Gleeson was on target for the men of blue and white to leave both sides level with 4 points apiece at half time. That same man again hit Lismore for two quick points in the opening minutes of the second half. But Lismore reacted in kind and broke through the Sion defence to crash the ball to the back of net. Sion were hanging in with points from Lee Halligan but a goal was needed and Darren Gray supplied the finish to level the game. With moments left on the clock Austin Gleeson pointed to give Sion the lead. With seconds left on the clock Sion looked good to hold on to the lead but a throw ball which could be questioned led to an foul on one of the Lismore forwards which resulted in a free and a point to tie the game. Final score Mount Sion 1-10 to Lismore 1-10. Next Monday night the lads travel to Dungarvan to take on the home side. Throw in at 7pm.
Ladies Football
The Ladies faced their toughest opponents yet, St. Annes who are second on the table to us. This game took place last Friday night. It was a great game where our girls emerged victorious again and remain unbeaten. Well done to all the girls and their mentors Ian Galgey and Ian Sheridan.
