Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Senior Hurling Championship
After a long break the Championship has re-commenced, where we met Dungarvan in Walsh Park last Sunday evening. Sion opted to play into the town goal with the winds at their backs in the opening half. We started well with both Martin O’Neills pointing but Dungarvan capitalised on a defensive error to crash home their first goal. Martin O’Neill and Ken McGrath both got Sion back on level terms before a nice pass from Ian Galgey to Ken McGrath resulted in a Sion goal. Dungarvan pointed two frees with Eoin McGrath and Galgey replying. Another defensive error from Sion saw the Old Boro side go in at half time 2 points down. Playing into the wind in the second half Sion went three points ahead through Stephen Roche. Dungarvan were again relying on their free-taker who successfully converted two frees to bring it back to a one point game. Sion pushed on once again with Eoin McGrath blasting over from close range and Martin O’Neill slapping over another free. Dungarvan scored 4 unanswered points to take the lead. O’Neill again hit another free to draw it level. Dungarvan through Jamie Nagle went ahead once again. But substitute Sean Ryan made sure Sion would share the points as he pointed for the game to end Mount Sion 1-14 to Dungarvan 2-11. The next game is against Ballygunner in Walsh Park next Saturday at 6pm.Junior Hurling Championship
Two goals from Brian “Chick” Hennessey shows the way for Sion in a renewal of rivalry between Sion & Roanmore in Walsh Park last Wednesday evening. Roanmore opened the scoring but Darren Finn and Dan Kelly both pointed to open Sion’s account. Both teams went point for point with Sion getting points through Gavin Carroll, Rory Sheridan and Darren Finn. A wonderful strike from Chick Hennessey gave Sion a four point cushion at half time. After the break Roanmore upped the tempo of the game with two fine points with Barry Browne replying with a point. Roanmore tied the game up with a goal and gained the lead with a point moments later. Sion entered their period of dominance on the scoreboard with Chick, Dan Kelly, Carroll and Browne all getting their name on the score-sheet. With two minutes left on the clock, Dan Kelly’s short free fell into the path of Hennessey who finished to the net. Darren Finn finished the scoring with a point to leave the score Mount Sion 2-15 to Roanmore 1-10. Well done lads. The Eastern Final is down for the 10th September against De La Salle. Best of luck.Minor Championship
