Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Junior Hurling Championship
Ballygunner provided the venue for the Eastern Final pairing of Mount Sion and De La Salle last Saturday afternoon. In our previous meeting in the league we put in a disappointing performance conceding 5-1, to eventually lose out by two points. De La Salle got the ball rolling slotting over a point from the placed ball to get the opening score. Dan Kelly pointed for Sion with Darren Finn getting Sion’s first goal. De La Salle pointed but Finn cancelled the point out. Pauric Fanning goaled moments later but De La Salle hit Sion for three points with Dan Kelly pointing and Barry Browne finishing to the net in what was Sion’s best goal. Sion were seven points clear at half time. Playing into a tough and demanding wind in the second half, Sion coped the better of the two sides, along with upping their work-rate. The Cleaboy side hit the first point of the second half. A quick Dan Kelly free to Gavin Carroll ended in a great point for Sion. De La Salle went point for point with Barry Browne (which must be said was on fire in the corner!). Also Michael “Pecker” Power turned in a wonderful second half performance with the defence standing strong. Score of the game came with ten minutes left on the clock. Goalie Owen “Savo” Sauvage took short puck-out to Jess Kehoe who sent it up the line to no other than Babs Browne, who sent it over! Browne closed the game out with another three points with De La Salle only hitting back with a point. Final score Mount Sion 3-9 to De la Salle 0-9. Well done lads. It’s been a long time coming, but we are back in a Junior county final!Minor Championship
We played the last round of the championship last Wednesday evening where we faced Dungarvan in Mount Sion. We produced another great performance to overcome the “old Boro” side. We started the better with a well taken goal form Darren Finn but Dungarvan closed the gap and eventually scored their own goal to take the lead. But it didn’t last long with Austin Gleeson popping over two points and his long ball from the middle of the field evaded their defence and goalie to end up in the back of the net. Again he hit Dungarvan for four points but Dungarvan replied with three of their own. Evan Sheridan finished the scoring of the half with a goal to give Sion a six point lead. From the throw in Dungarvan pushed on to win a 65 which they successfully converted and added two more points. Austin pointed for Sion with a spectacular long range attempt. Both sides went point for point with Sion getting their scores through Austin, Evan Sheridan and Aaron Dempsey. Play was halted for a long period for an injury to a Dungarvan player, who was thought to have suffered a broken leg in a freak accident. (All at Mount Sion would like to wish him a speedy recovery!) With the light fading fast Sion finished the game out with all of the last three mentioned pointing for Sion. Final score Mount Sion 3-13 to Dungarvan 2-12. Well done lads.Senior Hurling
Best of luck to our Senior Hurlers who take on Ballyduff Upper in Fraher Field in the Quarter Final of the championship next Saturday 17th September. Lets get behind the lads and get up and cheer them on. Throw in at 5:30pm.
The Late Christy Power
We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Ally, Sons, Daughters, Brother, Sister, Grandchildren and his extended family. Christy worked as barman in the Club Centre for a number of years. He also was involved on the backroom team when the senior hurlers won the Munster Club Championship for the first time in 1981. His grandson Stephen is a present player with the club at underage level. Ar dheis de go raibh Siad.

This in house tournament is played each year by the 7,8 and 9 year olds in Memory and Honour of the late great Mount Sion, Waterford and Munster player for the John Keane Cup kindly donated by the Keane family some years ago. Year after year the standard of play by the young players is a joy to see and I’m sure that this year won’t be an exception. So plenty of practice is needed between now and the 14th.Mum & Me
