Primary Mini Sevens;
Our Under 12 school hurlers competed on Tuesday last in the Mini Sevens blitz in Ballygunner to determine which school from the East would advance to the county final.
Our very young team went in to the day facing Ballygunner in their opening game. The boys started very slowly against a bigger Ballygunner team and found themselves five points in arrears at half time. In the second half however the boys took the game to Ballygunner and despite having lots of possession, we ran out losing the tie by four points.
In the next game the boys faced St. Declan’s. This was a game where the boys showed great skill and determination and ran out winners by seven points. This victory was followed by a victory over De La Salle Stephen Street, again with the boys playing some wonderful hurling.
With St Declan’s beating Ballygunner, it meant that if we could account for Scoil Lorcáin in our final group game we would have to meet Ballygunner in a play off to decide the winners. Despite leading for most of the game, a late and determined rally from the John’s Park school saw them plunder two goals and run out deserving winners.
Despite the disappointment, the boys performed excellently and were only narrowly shut out from a place in the county final. Eoghan Browne, despite his young years, continues to show himself to be a goalkeeper of great promise. Jordan Hutchinson, captain for the day, is developing into a very strong leader in defence. Here he was very ably assisted by a very solid and skilful Jack Whelan and the ever improving Jonathan Flynn who is becoming a very tight marking defender. Ben Flanagan continues to turn out excellent performances in almost every game he plays and yet he continues to work hard on improving his game. The tigerish Michael Flynn was probably the hardest working player on view and his no nonsense approach makes him a great asset to the team. Ben Sinnott, although playing out of position in the forwards, performed excellently and used his hurling brain to get some excellent scores throughout the afternoon. Young Evan McGrath, although only in fourth class justified his selection with several brilliant performances, most notably against St Declan’s where he scored a stunning goal. Daniel Jacob is improving greatly and was unlucky not to seal victory in our final game with a tremendous effort that was brilliantly saved by the Scoil Lorcáin goalkeeper. Dale O’ Keefe is another whose hurling has come on hugely over the past year and the great bonus with Dale is that he is equally comfortable playing in the backs or the forwards. His physical strength proved vital in the St Declan’s game.
Well done to all on an excellent afternoon’s hurling.
Mr Binman Blitzes.
Our second and third class hurlers participated in round 2 of the Mr Binman blitzes on Thursday last in glorious sunshine in the De La Salle grounds in Gracedieu. Again we took three teams to the blitzes, with new additions Adam Flannery, Martin Cash, Seán Foley and Daniel Danivilenko strengthening the panels.
Once again the boys performed brilliantly and there were some fantastic matches throughout the afternoon by the city’s young hurlers. For team 1, Samuel Mathe continued to give powerful performance in defence and he was greatly assisted by the skill of Kieran Ryan, Cian O’ Grady and a much improved Conor Meaney. Kieran Hanrahan and Kieran Ryan showed some great skill and David Adebayo again showed great natural flair. Adam Flannery was very impressive on his debut and scored a wonderful goal. Martin Cash was solid in goal and the team was led very well once again by the skilful Scott Hoban and PJ Murphy.
Team 2 was again involved in some tremendous battles. Daire Burke showed that he has great potential in defence and he received great support from the strong and skilful Thomas McLawrence. Conor Tierney again displayed a great eye for goal and in Caelan Wall we had the most improved player on view. Cian O’ Sullivan, Ben Ryan were hugely impressive and Vitarus Planciunas again showed how he has all the skills to develop into a very good hurler. Brian Murphy capped his displays with a super goal against Scoil Lorcáin. Séan Foley, in his first week at the blitzes showed what an addition he was with some very good displays. And in Stephen Flynn and PJ Fanning, team 2 had two of the hardest and most effective workers on the pitch.
Team 3 continued where they left off last week with some wonderful displays. Daniel Danivilenko, on his debut performed very well. Jack Byrne showed his great skill to score a brilliant goal against Ballygunner and Ben Le Blanc and Séan Dunne impressed in a variety of positions throughout the afternoon. Aaron Murphy and Yuri Eliyashevsky were again very impressive. Oisín Daly was once again one of the best players on view and in Eoin Power and Ben Frisby, Team 2 had two boys with tremendous hurling skills. Team 2 was once again backboned by young Timi Sobowale who, if he trains hard, will become a very good hurler indeed.
Well done to all the boys for a super effort. Once again the school would like to thank Seamie Nolan and Damien Frisby, club coaches who again gave of their time to take charge of the teams for the afternoon. Next Thursday’s games take place in Sacred Heart’s new pitches in St John’s Park at 12o’clock.
Yard Hurling:
Yard hurling continues apace this week. Points very important for finals so make sure you don’t forget your hurley and helmets this week.
School Training:
School under 11 and under 13 resumes on Tuesday at 3pm in club. Training will be in the ball alley and on the pitch so make sure boys have football boots. School leagues will begin immediately after the Easter holidays.
