Under 8s
Our U-8 squad travelled to Gorey on Saturday last to contest the Annual Tournament held in the Naomh Eanna Club. They did very well in the Group Stage winning 3 of their 4 games and narrowly missing on topping the group following a narrow defeat to Kilmacud Crokes. In the Plate semi final they trailed by 3 goals at the break but a great effort in the 2nd half saw them get within 2 points of their opponents Cranford before time ran out to grab a winning goal. Well done to all the boys who did the club proud on the day. The panel for the day was Jack Byrne, Ryan Kelly, Aaron Murphy O’Connell, Ronan Quinn, Peter Nolan, Jamie Gleeson, Daniel Murphy, Stephen Finn, Adam O’Connor, Sean Doocey, Ben Frisby, Dylan Butler, Jake Cawley, Kieran Hanrahan, Cian O’Grady, Jack Sweeney, Ben Dunphy Tynan, Craig O’Neill, Dylan Browne and Dean Walsh.
Intermediate Championship
The intermediates faced De La Salle in Walsh Park last Thursday night in the quarter finals stage of the championship. De La Salle got off to the better start with 2 points before Michael Frisby opening the scoring for Mount Sion. After 5 unanswered points Frisby replied once again from the placed ball to put four between the sides. De La Salle finished the half stronger however Richie Murphy took a well taken goal along with a Frisby 21 Yard Free which resulted in a goal to leave 2 between the teams. Mount Sion were fast out of the blocks with Michael King pointing from the sideline and Richie Roche scoring from a long range free. The introduction of Barry Browne proved vital in the Mount Sion come back when he scored 1-1 from play. Unfortunately De La Salle replied in quick succession and finished the game one point up on a score line of 1-14 to Mount Sion’s 3-7.
Junior Hurling Championship
The juniors also played De La Salle this week in the semi-finals of the championship in what was a close encounter and it took extra time to separate the sides. De La Salle opened the scoring with 5 unanswered points before Mount Sion opened their account with a point. Brian “Chick” Hennessey picked up a nasty head injury and was replaced by Patrick Bowe. Bowe was quick into the action and bagged himself a goal but Mount Sion trailed at the interval. In the second half Mount Sion fought back with a goal from Bryan Power and well taken frees from Stephen O’Neill to put the game to extra time on a full time score of Mount Sion 2-7 to De La Salle 1-10. Mount Sion got off to a flying start with 2 quick points. De La Salle looked to be dead on their feet but a goal reignited De La Salle’s intentions. The second half of extra time Mount Sion played against the strong breeze and a strong sun. De La Salle increased the pressure with several unanswered points and another goal to give them the win and send them into the Eastern final.
Minor Championship
The minor hurlers gave their best display of the championship against a much fancied Ballygunner in Ballygunner last Wednesday night. Mount Sion took the game to Ballygunner and lead for most of the game until 5 minutes from time, when Ballygunner produced a late rally to finish the game 2 points up. Final score Mount Sion 1-15 to Ballygunner 0-20.
