Under 16 County Final
Pride of place once again must go to The Shercon Under 16s who are County Division 2 Champions after a 1-13 to 2-6 win against Passage in Walsh Park. This was a tightly contested game with both sides producing some fine scores. Passage opened the scoring with a free, before points from Austin Gleeson and Eoin Daniels gave Mount Sion the lead. Passage hit back with a goal and 2 points to regain the lead. Mount Sion and Passage were reduced to 14 men, after Austin Gleeson received a second yellow card for Mount Sion. Further points from Cathal Dower and captain Aaron Coady reduced the margin to one point at half time.
Playing with a slight breeze in the second half Mount Sion pulled away with thanks to points from Cian O’Regan, Darren Finn, and Cathal Dower. A goal by Darren Finn gave Mount Sion a 6 point lead with 10 minutes remaining. Passage went goal searching but some fine saves by Stephen Power in the Mount Sion goal and great defending by Mark Flanagan, Sean Kelly, Ian Halligan and Peter Penkert kept Passage out until the final moments where Passage grabbed a goal but their effort was in vain as Mount Sion still held a 4 point lead and remained unbeaten all year. This was a great game of hurling where the boys showed great passion, determination and skill in their efforts to become County Champions. There were some great performances through-out the field none more so that Aaron Coady, who lead from centre-back. Captain Aaron Coady accepted the cup and thanked all the mentors for their effort and support during the year. Congratulations to all involved.

Stay & Play Hurling Blitzes – Under 8s
The Under 8’s have been really busy over the past couple of weeks taking part in several blitzes across the city. Last Monday night they played Del La Salle and Sacred Heart in Grace Dieu and Ballygunner in Ballygunner. These young players did very well and we drafted in some of our younger players and they applied themselves very well in the games.
The second evening of the Under 8 Blitz took place in Mount Sion and the De La Salle College grounds on Monday evening last. Both teams played 3 matches each and played some great hurling. The next blitz is a football one for the same ages which takes place on June 14th in Erin’s Own.
Junior Footballers
Our Junior Footballers played their 4th game of the championship away to Butlerstown last Friday night. A superb solo run and finish to the net from Dan Kelly sealed the win in the second half, with Dan’s younger brother Pat turning in a man of the match performance in defence. Also a credible mention to Nicky Mackey who pulled off some great saves on the Sion goal. Final score Mount Sion 2-9 to Butlerstown 0-9.
Sargent Cup Semi Final
The Senior hurlers travelled to a sundrenched Fraher Field to take on Lismore in the Semi-Final of the Sargent Cup last Wednesday. Both sides fielded under strength sides, with minor, under 21 and senior inter-county players in action in the coming weeks. Both teams were having trouble finding the target with Lismore leading at the break by one point. The second half was much the same as the first with both sides failing to convert scores. But Lismore finished the half with a goal in the final minutes to secure their 4 points win. Final score Sion 0-7 to Lismore 1-8. These two teams meet in the championship on Sunday 13th June at 2pm in Fraher Field.

Brother Dowling Cup
This year sees the Brother Dowling Cup extended to a full inter schools competition involving Mount Sion and CBS schools from Kilkenny and Tipperary. Brother Dowling, aside from being a great educationalist was instrumental in the fostering and nurturing of young hurlers in Mount Sion for a generation. Amongst those who prospered during Brother Dowling’s time in the school were hurlers such as Ken and Eoin McGrath, Eoin Kelly, Brian Greene and many, many more! The Dowling family have donated a magnificent cup which will now be competed for by under 12 hurlers from CBS schools in the South East-a fitting tribute to giant of Mount Sion school.
This year, the schools competing will be Scoil Iognáid de Rís Kilkenny, Bunscoil McCauley Rice Callan, St. Mary’s CBS Primary Carrick-on-Suir and Mount Sion CBS. The tournament will take place on Tuesday 22nd June 2010. The tournament is for Under 12 hurlers. The day will involve a shield final and of course a final for the Brother Dowling Perpetual Trophy. The family of the late Brother Dowling will present the trophies to the winning schools and we hope that any club members available on the day will attend to commemorate a very special man and enjoy a great festival of Under 12 hurling.
