Mount Sion GAA Club News
Senior
Last Thursday saw the seniors play their first competitive game of the year in a tournament which was hosted by the St. Molleran’s Club in Carrick-Beg. Over the next few weeks the teams play a knock-out game and they advance. The game last Thursday was the quarter-final against Carrick-Swans. Mount Sion fielded a side with a number of notable absentees including Tony Browne and Eoin McGrath who are on county-duty, however the man of the moment Ken McGrath was available for selection.
Swans struck first but Ken McGrath opened Sion’s account moments later. Both sides went point for point but it was Ian Galgey’s goal that gave Sion a two point margin lead at half time. Sion dominated the second half with some fine scores coming from Michael Frisby, Ken McGrath, Ian Galgey, Brian Cusack and both Martin O’Neills. A late rally by the Swans was too late as Martin O’Neill closed the gate with 2 sweetly struck frees. It was a great sporting game with Sion looking the better team overall. Final score Mount Sion 1-13 to 0-13. Fixture of the Semi-Final will be posted online once its available.
Andy Fleming
It’s an end of an era when news broke early Sunday morning of the death of Andy Fleming a long and loyal servant of the Blue & White for both Waterford and Mount Sion. Andy played from 1939 until he retired in 1951 and was a winner of six Senior Hurling County medals and two Junior Football. He was at right full back when Waterford won their first Senior Hurling All-Ireland in 1948 and was until Sunday the only surviving member of the team. Having eight appearances with Munster in Railway Cup Hurling Finals, he collected seven winning medals. He was named on the Waterford Team of The Century in 1984. With John Keane and Paddy Dowling it was considered the best half back line in Ireland in the early 1940s. Andy was made Vice President of the club in the year 2000 and named at right full back on the Waterford Millennium team. On behalf of Cnoc Sion we would like to offer our sincere condolences to the Fleming family. Ar dheis de go raibh Siad.
