Monday night saw the seniors play the Quarter-Final against Fourmilewater in the fabulous new facility in Carrignore. Fourmilewater had the breeze in the opening half. Ross O’Keeffe and Michael Frisby traded points with the westerners in the opening minutes. However, using the breeze to their advantage Fourmile began to dominate and slotted over 2 points before the opening goal of the game came. A collision of two Sion defenders gave the unmarked corner forward every chance to put the ball past Ian O’Regan in the Sion goal. Kenny Stafford and Sean Ryan pulled two back for Sion before Martin F. O’Neill broke through to finish to the net. Fourmile responded quickly with 2 points but Chris Ryan kept Sion in touch with a well taken free. Fourmile once again pulled away with another goal and a brace of points. Dermot O’Byrne popped up with 2 goals in the closing minutes of the first half to pull Sion back into the game and leave 3 between them. From the start of the second half Sion dominated with Kenny Stafford on target twice from the placed ball and further points from Michael Frisby, Anthony Kirwan and Jamie O’Meara who was now operating at half forward and giving Sion the lead for the first time in the game. Fourmile finally opened their second half account 15 minutes into the half. But again that man Kenny Stafford was on target from both play and from frees. An inch perfect pass from Jamie O’Meara to Michael Frisby resulted in a score for the Monastery outfit. Veteran forward Anthony Kirwan increased our lead before Fourmile got their third goal. Martin F. O’Neill and Jamie O’Meara and Anthony Kirwan closed out the scoring to book our place in the Semi-Final. Final score Mount Sion 3-17 to Fourmilewater 3-13. The Semi-Final date needs to be confirmed.Junior Football Championship
Our Junior Footballers travelled to Ferrybank to take on the home side in the next round of the championship. Ferrybank opened the scoring but a score from the Dan “Goat” Kelly levelled the game. Both sides went point for point with Rory Sheridan and Michael Frisby supplying the points. However Ferrybank were just one ahead at half time. The second half gave free-taker Michael Frisby a number of opportunities to put Sion ahead and he willingly accepted. Half way through the half Ferrybank got their first second half score and moments later added a second to tie up the game. Sion’s claim for a penalty in the dying minutes was denied and the game finished up 8 points apiece. Ian Sheridan was as solid as ever in the Sion goal, with Eoin Swift and Sean Ryan looking impressive in the defence. Ian O’Regan and Robert Breslin stood out in the middle of the park with Michael Frisby and Dan Kelly providing the threat upfront. There is no fixture yet for the next game. But details will follow once there got.Speedy Recovery
During the week one of our minor hurlers, Mark Flanagan suffered a freak accident and broke his leg. From all your friends Mark, we wish you a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing you back on the hurling field.
