Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Minor Championship
We travelled to Lismore to take on the home side in the third round of the championship. We opened the scoring through the stick of Stephen O’Neill and Joey Sinnott got the second. Lismore opened their account with a free which was successfully converted through their county star Stephen Bennett. Aaron Dempsey traded points with Lismore along with Darren Finn and Stephen O’Neill. Lismore got on a roll when they slotted over a few points and they grabbed the opening goal of the game 22 minutes in. Lismore continued their dominance with points from Stephen O’Neill and Austin Gleeson keeping us in touch. Lismore goaled again just before the end of the first half to lead by 9 points. After the break Austin Gleeson went point for point with Stephen Bennett with Stephen O’Neill breaking the sequence with a successful 65. Gleeson got Sion’s first goal with a finely taken free which found its way through the Lismore defence. Lismore furthered their lead with 2 points and also got their third goal. Gleeson and O’Neill brought it back to 6 points as the game entered into the final minutes. Darren Finn brought that to 3 points when he tapped home from close range. Time ran out with little or no injury time played to leave the score Mount Sion 2-15 to Lismore 3-15. Hard luck lads. Next game is down for 10th August, but will more than likely be moved to accommodate the Waterford minors who are in the All Ireland Semi-Final.Ladies Football Championship
The Ladies Footballers took on Stradbally in the championship in the club last Monday night. It was a very entertaining game with some great goals from Louise Sheridan, Trish Cleary, Jessica Gleeson, Rachel Beckett, and Claire Smith. Well done to the girls. Also a speedy recovery to Amy O’Sullivan who got injured during the game. Amy is on both our Camogie and Ladies Football teams. We hope to see you back playing soon.Under 16 Championship
We received a walkover from Cois Bhride in the Under 16 football championship last Monday. So our next game is down for 3rd August against Dunhill/Fenor.Under 15 Championship
Our Under 15s faced the stiff opposition of Ballygunner in the last round of the championship. Ballygunner were far superior and more economical with the ball to out-score this young Sion side. Hard luck lads, but keep training away we still have a semi-final to play for.County Teams
Best of luck to the Waterford Senior hurlers as they play the All Ireland Semi-Final on Sunday next against our close neighbours Kilkenny. We especially wish Tony Browne, Eoin McGrath and Paraic Fanning the very best of luck. Up the Deise!!
