Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Club AGM
Our AGM took place last Sunday afternoon in the Club Centre. A large crowd gathered to look back on 2011 and plan ahead for 2012. Secretary Seamie Cleere must be congratulated on his report and Anthony Kirwan informed us that the newly constructed gym is near completion and thanked all those who gave up their time and expertise to help out. Due to circumstances out of our control the accounts weren’t audited. But the audited accounts will be made available to members in the early New Year once they are completed. Treasurer Tom Power did provide a set of accounts and the main theme was that we need to keep control of our expenses and create new ways of generating revenue to supplement the cost of running our hurling and football club. In the chairman’s address Sean spoke about the year that passed and congratulated the Junior Hurlers for becoming County Champions and the Junior Footballers for reaching the Co. Final. He also spoke of the hard times we face with many of our players that have travelled abroad in the search of work. The club would like to wish all our players on foreign soil the best for Christmas and that there is always a place in Mount Sion when ye return. In the election of officers the following were elected: Chairman – Sean O’Dwyer; Vice-Chairman – Kevin Ryan; Secretary – Seamus Cleere; Treasurer – Tom Power; PRO – Owen Sauvage; Registrar – Paul Fanning; Development Officer – Anthony Kirwan; Fundraising – Josie Evans; Entertainment/Ladies Committee – Tina Gleeson. Committee Members: Roy McGrath, Phil Fanning, Jimmy Meaney and new member Michael Flanagan. In one way it’s an end of an era with the retirement of Betty Forristal and Paddy “Moremiles” Murphy from the executive committee in the club. In all, 30 years each they have given and no one can doubt the contribution they have made to make the club what it is today. We wish them all the best in the future as they sail off into retirement. Also Davy Carroll was of course ratified as Field Director for 2012! The same management and selectors were ratified for the Senior job with Jimmy also taking over as Intermediate Manager. Both Junior teams have the same managers with Nicholas Mackey looking after the Under 21 and Philip Flynn in charge of the Minors.
For a third year in a row Christopher Ryan was given Adult Player of the year and he will lead Mount Sion as captain in the championship for 2012. Stephen Roche will act as vice-captain. Under 21 Captain is Martin (Blondie) O’Neill and Ian Galgey will be vice-captain. Young hurler of the year was Peter Penkert and was well deserved for his performances in both Junior Hurling Finals. Also both motions put forward by the Executive were carried with the majority. Well done to all those nominated and elected!Presentation Day/Night
We held the Under 5-10s Awards on Saturday afternoon. It was great to see so many Mammy, Daddy’s and Grandparents present to see the future hurlers of Sion collect their medals for the games they played over the year. The Under 11-16 medal presentation will take place on Thursday 15th December. Hope to see all the family and lads there.Eastern Board
Congratulations to our club Secretary Seamus Cleere who has been elected as Assistant-Secretary to the Eastern Board at their Convention recently. Best of luck Seamie.Referee’s Course
A Level one basic referee’s course will begin in January and will run on the following dates in January 17th, 19th, 24th and 26th. This course is for anyone over 17 years of age. Anyone interested please contact Jim Murphy on 087-6758221 for an application form.Deise Draw
We had one winner in last month’s Deise Draw, Jim Greene who picked up a handy €500. Congratulations Jim. The annual in-house Deise Draw will take place for all Mount Sion ticket holders on Friday 9th December at 9pm in the club. We hope to see ye all there.Poker League
Week twelve and the final night in the league will take place this Wednesday 7th December. Only four people are certain of a place on the final table later in December. So the big question is….who will guarantee themselves a seat at the final table??The top 8 will automatically qualify for the final table in December. There will also be a one off freeze-out €15 euro game for people who don’t make the top 8 and who have played more than 6 games in the league. The top 2 places will win a ticket to the final table, making a final table of 10. All the weekly league scores and overall leader board are on the website.
