Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes

Senior Hurling Championship

In the first round of the Senior Championship we faced nearest rivals De La Salle in Walsh Park. A match that gave so much expectations of a titanic clash never materialised. De La Salle opened the scoring on two minutes with a goal and tagged on a couple of points. Martin O’Neill pointed for Sion from a free. De La Salle replied with Ken McGrath stroking over. De La Salle found the net again with O’Neill pointing again. Sion’s next score came again from McGrath with a quick touch and strike over the bar. Old stock Jamie O’Meara also pointed. Half time score Sion 0-6 to De La Salle 2-8.

Six minutes into the second half and the Cleaboy natives bagged themselves their third goal. Sion’s reply came with two O’Neill frees. The game as a competition was truly over before it even began. Sion’s remaining scores coming from O’Neill and McGrath. With McGrath successfully converting a penalty. Final score Mount Sion 1-13 to De La Salle 3-16. Hopefully we can turn things around when we face Dunhill in Walsh Park next Sunday. Throw in at 2pm. Best of luck lads.

Intermediate Hurling Championship

Intermediate Championship also got underway last Sunday when we faced last year’s Eastern Finalists Portlaw in Kill. Portlaw opened the scoring within thirty seconds with a point, Sion replied moments later with Aaron Coady firing over. Last year’s junior captain Gavin Carroll was in fine form and got his first score of the afternoon. Ian “Bomb” Power narrowly missed a clear goal chance when the ball trickled wide from close range. Portlaw drew level with a point but Carroll pointed two further frees. Power drove over with Portlaw replying. On sixteenth minute Michael Frisby got his first score. A quick reply followed from Portlaw. Carroll furthered our lead to three points with another pointed free. But that was soon reduced to a single point. From the Sion puck out Brian Cusack struck over with Michael Power also getting in on the scoring. Carroll and Cusack finished out the Sion scoring of the first half. Sion led at half time by four points.

Playing against the breeze in the second half, Sion were first to concede when Portlaw pointed. Midfielder Aaron Coady got his second of the afternoon. The hard working Aaron Dempsey pointed in the fifth minute. Pat McGrath won a great ball in the middle of the field and popped the pass to Michael Frisby to extend Sion’s lead. Carroll went point for point with the Portlaw lads with Cusack finishing out the half with a point. Final score Mount Sion 0-20 to Portlaw 0-13. Well done lads, great win to start the championship. Best of luck next Saturday against Ferrybank in Walsh Park at 4pm.

Junior Hurling Championship

With already full points from our first three games, the lads kept up their winning ways when they faced Ballygunner in Ballygunner last Thursday evening. It was nip and tuck in the opening half with both teams exchanging points with Sion taking the lead early on from Paul Browne who hit the back of the net, carrying on from where his brother Barry left off last year. Pat McGrath, Dan Kelly and Michael Power all hit points with Sion taking the lead by the minimum at half time.

Playing with a slight breeze in the second half it was Ballygunner who overturned the lead but that was quickly quashed with Dan Kelly finding his range from a free. Big Chick Hennessey also hit one, with Kelly adding another. The Gunners pointed but a thundering strike from Johnny Hayes gave their keeper no chance and the ball rippled into the top corner. Pat McGrath showed some individual piece of skill when he controlled the ball without catching and slapped it over for his second point. Substitute Mark Flanagan was quick in on the action when he pointed. The ever reliable number seven Jess Kehoe got his name on the score-sheet when he took off up the pitch and blasted over. McGrath’s got his last score as a Junior Hurler to finish out the game. Final score Mount Sion 2-10 to Ballygunner 0-9. Well done lads. We play Roanmore in Roanmore next Friday night 11th May at 7:30pm. Hope we can continue to gather the big crowds for the games. Best of luck lads.

Rhythm Fest

Waterford GAA County Board in association with Blue Fire Events are holding “The Rhythm Fest” in Fraher Field on Saturday 30th June featuring, Bressie, The High Kings, The Lounge Room Lizards, Atom Attic and DJ Tyrone. On Sunday 1st July they have Jedward, Ryan Dolan, DJ Tyrone, Ryan Bassindale and Evolution Hip Hop Dance Troupe. Tickets are available from all clubs via their secretaries. Tickets for Saturday night are priced at €25 and on Sunday €27.50. A limited number of family tickets are available at €90.

Kellogg’s GAA Cul Camp

This year our Kellogg’s Cúl Camp will run from 23rd July to 27th July. Application forms will be available shortly and will be distributed to all juvenile teams. The camp is for 5-13 year olds. Please keep an eye out for the special promotional packs of Kellogg’s Cereal for discount’s on the camp. If you require further information please contact the club co-ordinator for the camps and juvenile chairman Peter Walsh.

Deise Draw

Next month’s Draw will take place on May 25th. Tickets can be bought from any of the promoters or from behind the bar. A list of all promoters names can be seen on the notice board in the club. Tickets are €10 per draw. This year you will have the chance to win a top prize of a car in the March draw and in the May, August and November Draw’s there will be a special draw for a €1,000 holiday voucher and €500 spending money.

Under 12 City League v Glenmore in Glenmore at 6:30pm on Friday 11th May.

Junior Hurling Championship v Roanmore in Roanmore at 7:30pm on Friday 11th May.

Intermediate Championship v Ferrybank in Walsh Park at 4pm on Saturday 12th May.

Senior Hurling Championship v Dunhill in Walsh Park at 2pm on Sunday 13th May.

Juvenile Training Times

The following are the times and venues are for juvenile hurling training:

5 to 7 year olds Children born in 2005, 2006 & 2007 takes place at 12 Noon every Saturday on the All-Weather Astro-Turf Pitch at the Club Grounds.

Juvenile Camogie Training also takes place on Saturdays at 12 noon on The All-Weather Astro-Turf Pitch at the Club Grounds.

8 & 9 year olds, Boys born in 2003 and 2004 takes place from 11am-12pm on Saturdays at the Club field.

10 & 11 year old boys takes place on a Tuesday nights at 6pm-7pm on the pitch.

Looking to get your child involved in sport or meet new friends. Then bring them along to the correct age group or contact Juvenile Chairman Peter Walsh for more information. Training is 100% free and hurleys and helmets can be supplied to those who need them. Best of luck to all the children and coaches for 2012!!

Darts & Cards

Darts and Cards for club members. Come along and join in the fun. Darts takes place every Thursday night with Cards on Friday nights, both starting around 10pm. Great prizes on offer!! All Club Members are welcome.
