Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Senior Hurling
A meeting of old rivals, Cnoc Sion and Baile Mhic Gonair, in the quarter finals on Sunday last served up a tightly contested game with the Monastery men proving there is still life left in the old dog yet! Ballygunner opened up proceedings with a point on two minutes followed closely with a Barry Mullane goal. Martin O’Neill opened Sion’s balance with a sixty-five. And again it was the youngster who had two more points to his tally with two successful frees. Ballygunner replied but a well found pass from Sean Ryan to master McGrath had Sion nipping at the Champions heals. Ian O’Regan proved his great form as he pulled off a great save in the Sion goal. O’Neill pointed another free with Ballygunner’s wing back creeping up to go one point ahead. The game was level again for half time as Austin Gleeson pointed. O’Neill fired Sion one ahead but in true Gunner fashion they quickly went one ahead with two points on the trot. Young Stephen Roche began to come more into the game with a point. Martin proved his worth from the placed balls as he traded scores with his county colleague Pauric Mahony. Midfielder Michael Gaffney collected a ball from the corner and shot over. The introduction the experienced Anthony Kirwan for the injured Owen Whelan, may well proved a great turning point. From a tight angle under the stand, Kirwan reeled in the years with a fantastic point. But he wasn’t finished there, with another point just two minutes later. Shane O’Sullivan’s long range strike sailed over with three between the sides. Stephen Roche raised another white flag and made gap wider. Minutes left, Ballygunner on the brink of losing their title and Síon on the edge of a Semi-Final appearance. Drama unfolded as the Gunners ran through and cut the lead to a single point with a goal. However, Síon didn’t panic and up stepped Ken McGrath to send a super point over as time slipped into the closing minutes. From the resulting puck out a catch by Pauric Mahony, and as he fell the referee blew his whistle for a free in. With two points down the Gunners had no choice but to go for the juggler, a goal. However, Síon saved and set up a date with De La Salle!! Well done lads! Great performance, super attitude, heart and determination. We look forward to the Semi-Final against De La Salle on Saturday 29th September at 5pm in Walsh Park.Intermediate Hurling
Our Intermediates took on Clonea in the eastern semi-final in Kill last Saturday evening. Mount Sion started brightly and opened the scoring thanks to the free taking abilities of Ian “Bomb” Power. However this lead was short lived as Clonea quickly replied with two points of their own. Mount Sion soon responded with the converted forward Paul Kehoe getting on the score sheet with a fine point. The turning point of the first half came in the 17th minute when a mistake in the Sion defence allowed the Clonea attack to work the ball in for their first goal of the game. This was soon followed by another goal with Clonea clearly in the driving seat leading 2-10 to 0-4 at the break. After several positional changes at half time Sion finally came into game and began slowly to eat into Clonea’s lead with some fine scores coming from Ian Power, Darren Finn and especially Shane Forristal two long range frees. However Clonea held their lead and even a late goal by Richie Roche was not enough as Clonea ran out winners on a score-line of 2-14 to 1-11.Much credit has to be given to the spirit of this team who never gave up throughout this match. Even after losing several players to Senior this team was still extremely competitive As can be seen with their great wins in the championship this year. Well done lads.
Minor
The Minors played their last game of the championship against Dungarvan last Monday evening in Dungarvan. We played some nice hurling in the opening half with Darren Finn and Austin Gleeson leading the scoring for the Sion. Just before the break Dungarvan snuck two quick goals to lead by four at half time. Dungarvan second half performance was second to none and they ran out convincing winners. Thanks to Philly Flynn, Michael Flanagan, Peter Roche and Eoin McGrath for their efforts through-out the year.
Under 16
Our Under 16s played Cappoquin in the Quarter Finals of the Championship in Lemybrien last Sunday morning. Our lads didn’t really settle in the opening half and trailed at half time by four points. The second half saw a different side as the lads picked up their game and Ferdia opened Sion’s second half account just minutes in. Eric Hoban turned in a great performance scoring three of the next five points for Sion all from play with Ferdia and Cian O’Regan picking up the others. However, this game was still pretty much in the balance but a goal from Cian O’Regan from a penalty put six points between the sides as Cappoquin were reduced to fourteen men. Cappoquinn did keep the pressure on and a save by Conor Mallone in the Sion goal resulted in a sixty five for Cappoquin, which they scored. Sion finished out the game stronger with O’Regan pointing from a free and Darren Gray getting his second point of the day. Well done lads, great performance, we look forward to the Semi-Final.Ladies Football
Our Ladies were in action twice this week. On Wednesday they had a great win over Ballysaggart in what was a very one sided game. But on Sunday evening the girls were in Semi-Final action against Na Deise. A tight affair was in store with Sion falling behind early on but with true spirit a goal from Jennie Coady with Sion trailing by the minimum at half time. Playing into the home goal the girls upped their game and their efforts and ran in another goal along with five points from the boot of Ciara Phelan safely got Sion back into a final. Well done girls, great efforts all round and keep listening to Johnnie!! Well done to all and to their manager Johnnie Cleary. Final score Cnoc Sion 2-5 to Na Deise 0-5.
Under 13
Hard luck to the Under 13s who narrowly lost out to De La Salle in the Eastern Championship on Saturday last. We missed a number of great opportunities and the loss of Edward Cullen early on in the match proved to be the decider. This is a great little side and we look forward to seeing them progress at Under 14 next year.Juvenile Camogie
