Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
County Champions!
Our Ladies Footballers after a several years of searching have become County Champions with a well deserved win over Ardmore on Sunday afternoon in Lemybrien. Sion were unlucky in the opening thirty seconds not to be a goal up when the post came to Ardmore’s rescue and ball was cleared down the pitch. But Sion took the lead on four minutes with Ciara Phelan fisting the ball over the bar. Ardmore replied but Jessica Gleeson’s run from midfield gave Sion a one point lead. Her midfield partner, Ailish Dunphy pointed soon after and Sion were on their way. In the third quarter of the first half, Ardmore were awarded a penalty, but cool as a breeze, Anne-Marie Barrett stood firm and saved. Sion had a five point lead at half time.
Sion again were unlucky with the ball not once, but twice saving Ardmore’s bacon early on in the second half. A Phelan point in the twenty first minute increased Sion’s lead. The cross bar at the other end of the pitch came in handy as Ardmore were first to the rebound and booted over to pull one back. Ardmore never gave up, and had another two scores minutes later, one from play and one from a placed ball. Sion held firm, and were delighted to be the first adult Ladies Team to bring back some silver wear to the club. Well done to all and to their manager, Johnnie Cleary, who’s put in a lot of hard work over the last couple of months. Also to all that travelled to see the girls, I know they appreciated it very much. Well done again to all. Final score Cnoc Sion 0-9 to Ardmore 0-4.
Junior Football Semi-Final
Ferrybank were first to credit their account in the second half with a point. A pass out of defence by Craig Sauvage to Kevin Kelly, was finished over the bar by Michael Frisby. Ferrybank got a great score from a difficult to keep the pressure on the champions. Daniel Kelly shot over with Ferrybank began to pull away with three quick points. Richie Roche pointed with Robert Bresnan adding his second. Sion trailed by four points. An Ian Galgey goal gave Sion hope as just one point separated the sides and time heading into the final minute of injury time. The ball was played up the pitch and the referee signalled a free in for Sion, with Sion opting to go for the score from about thirty yards out. What can only be described as scandalous, is what happened next. The referee blew up with us not being allowed to take the free. A crucial decision which sees Sion exit the championship by a one point margin. A disappointing end for these bunch of lads. Thanks to Ian Power, Nicholas Mackey and John Walsh for their efforts with the team during the year.
Congratulations
